Why do College websites make admission rules/process fo difficult

It took me forever to find the information I needed from the UVA website. Why can't they make things in simple links. Anyway... I cant find the UVA down loadable paper application. It's driving me mad right now. Can someone please redirect me... and ALSO how long does it take for the prospective packets to arrive once you give them your personal information?

Can someone also tell me what should be included in the admissions packet and what the final date is to apply as well. Thanks.

The application goes live in a few days. For now, work on the essays. They are posted on the site in the news section. If you're on the mailing list, you'll get an email when the application is available.

The prospectus is exactly that. Some schools call it a viewbook.

The deadline for application is January 2, 2008.

Do they use the common application or not? I'm assuming NO, since they didn't give the link to that website anywhere. They make it sound as though they are using one of their OWN since they don't talk about it at all.

Also, is the essay the only thing they have given information about so far? Is there anything else I should be working on thats related to the app? Thanks again.

You can look at the commonap website to see what schools use it.

UVa doesn't use common application.

UVa will move to the common app next year. I've posted that before.

Once we release it, you will be able to fill out the application form in an hour or two. If you work on anything right now, work on your essays. They are very, very important to us.

golf clap

haha dean j is getting annoyed at everyone asking the same questions

Not at all. The length of my response is probably related to the time.

awe boo i thought dean j was pulling a hazelorb.

so, btw, does uva still have early decision? (JK)

how many letters of recommendation are required? And from who?

The counselor form is required, and recommendations are optional as far as I know. It would be best to have recommendations from one or two teachers who know you very well.

Hazelorb, where are you when we need you??
The UVA site is not that difficult and it is quite explicit about what is needed and when. IMO.

Hey Mister Sinister,

The UVA blog helps me keep on track with everything! Here's the link:

http://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/

Hope it helps you too!

lol @ ehiunno/jimmyjam
there's a new facebook application called 'google it stupid' or proly something harsher and i kinda wanna install it for this forum, a clickable button on quick reply... haha

UVA = 3 essays = hell a lot.

you gotta admit it's worth it though...

I'm actually kind of saddened to hear that UVA will be eventually going to the Common Application. It's so generic and impersonal, IMO. UVA's application and emphasis on the essays seemed to me, at least, to really zero in on the individual applicant. Even on the listing of one's EC's, it seemed to be a test to see if the applicant could really follow specific directions. And, I enjoyed the grumpy "how to write a good essay" link that is provided in the directions section. By way of the application, I knew UVA was different than others. However, there's obviously many facets to UVA that makes it what it is. I trust the good people in the admissions office to do what is best for the University. Heck, what do I know, really??!
It's all kind of a blur now, but I could swear that I wrote 4 essays, not 3 as Mister Sinister writes above. Oh well, I'm not into digging through old files right now to prove it.

The UVa application only really asks you to write two unique essays. We come right out and say that the third can be one you wrote for another school. This has been the case for years and years.

Our common app supplement will have our essays on it. The point of making the switch is to make this easier on students. Get the generic forms filled out, then move to the supplements, where the schools can go beyond the basics.

Jimmy, you thought the essay writing article was grumpy? It was written by Parke Muth for US News & World Report a few years back. I think the tone is more humorous than grumpy.

Dean J,

One of the parts of the application I found unique that I really disliked about the common app was the way that it asks us to present out EC's and awards. Instead of just listing them by name, it asks that we give a brief description of each one so they can be well understood and evaluated properly. To this day, I am not sure I properly explained any of my 'less than common' EC's or awards on the common app, but for UVa I had the opportunity to show exactly what they were.
