Why do colleges ask if I'm a twin/triplet?

So does anyone know why they ask that? So far I've seen the question asked on the Duke and Northwestern supplements. What does it mean if I answer yes to that question?

…That you are a twin/triplet, I would hope.

insightful, irishrabbit…

I mean, why do they care? does it make a difference to my admission?

Well, I have no clue what it would be doing in the college application, but if it’s in the financial aid application that would make sense to me…

Minority status? Haha just kidding. I saw that question too and I was kind of wondering the same thing…

Based on an explanation given by a Duke admissions officer about 5 years ago, the answer is yes it might affect admisison. Duke believes there is usually a strong bond between twins or triplets that can affect somewhat academic performance for the better and if it gets two twins applying and one has strong grades/test scores and other credentials and the other is a little weaker, they may admit them both on the belief that the second may actually perform close to what the first does.

hhmmm…I see

so it only matters if the other is applying too?

it’s not a hook that I’m a twin since my sister isn’t applying to any of the same schools I am? haha
