Why do colleges wait until the end to notify RD rejections?

I am sure that they winnow out more than 60% really early on -- why don't they just end the suspense and notify the denied candidates on a rolling basis so that the kids can modify their college lists as they hear from these schools? Is there some legal reason they can't? Are they concerned that there will be a deluge of appeals? Or that the kids will lose morale and fare badly? Inquiring minds want to know.

That would essentially be saying, “Your application is so terrible we knew immediately there was no chance of accepting you.” And that would be extremely rude.

True, it would be heartbreaking, but I have been joking for a few weeks about the “early reject” option - it would make FinAid applications so much easier, if colleges issued early rejections.

However, theoretically, right up to the last minute you could have a big change in your file - major award, error in test scores, wrong transcript.

Because they want as much time possible with the kids that were accepted? For if they have questions, concerns, etc. If they know earlier, they know to plan if they’re going or not.
