Why do I even bother

I'm taking 3 AP classes this year and apparently it doesn't count towards your gpa or class rank. [I'm a senior, btw] I haven't taken honors classes before, I was in College Prep. My gpa is 90.321 (unweighted) and I'm pretty much scared to know my class rank. I hope I'm in the top 20%.

Does taking AP English, AP Italian, AP Economics, and Pre-Calc-CP count for anything? I think after they look at my gpa and class rank, they won't even consider me. I'm just really down now, I'm probably going to be stuck in the local state school where everyone goes now, unless I bring my SAT score up.

I've taken it twice and my last chance is next week. I'm also taking Acts.
first time: 580M 530CR 560W
second time: 550M 560CR 590W
Superscore: 1730 =/

Do I have a chance of getting into an OOS university? Especially if I bring up my sat score? I'm taking Italian Sats, and Math Sats also.

I realized this should be in what are my chances thread, but I really need to know if I'm overreacting or not.

What kind of school are you going for?

Where do you plan on applying? There is a school for everyone, you just have to make sure you have a couple of true safeties on your list. There are schools that will give merit money to someone with your SATs scores and in the top 20%. Those colleges will not be found here on CC but they are out there.
Do not give up, just stay focused. Good Luck

you are overreacting

taking the classes in and of itself is beneficial for learning, be prepared for college courses etc

and yes, they WILL look at the classes you took, the AP won’t just be ignored

the vast majority of schools accept the majority of their applicants, so be smart in looking at your schools

there are some really amazing schools out there and many don’t use the SATm though your scores would be fine for many many schools

Whether or not the 3 APs you’re taking right now are weighted for your class rank or GPA is immaterial at this point. That ship has sailed. They will, however count for the challange of your senior year, and hopefully, if you do well in the exams, will get you out of a few classes when you get to college.

Don’t go crazy. You’ll find your fit. If you do take the SATs again, or shoot for the ACTs, practice the tests as much as you can - timed. Give it your best shot, or don’t do it at all.

I really want to go to the school in NYC. Or a school in the northeast that’s in a big city [I would like to be in a large school] I was sorta upset when I wrote this but even if I knew before I took these classes that it wouldn’t count for class rank, I would of still took them.

I am taking the sats again next weekend and I’m also taking ACTs. I think the reading I had to do for AP English & the stuff I learned in pre-calc will defintely help my sat score. Thanks guys, I feel a lot better :)

They will take in account for AP classes for sure. I think they re-calculate your GPA based on you school and its course difficulty. And also, taking APs can only help you. You can get college credit if you do well, and it will make you stronger academically.

Yes =) And plus, I’m taking APs in 2 of my favorite subjects [English & Italian].

Don’t stress about it now; you probably have a thousand other things to stress about without adding one more thing (as with all of us seniors).

BU would be a good reach school for you. There are many SUNY schools you should look at, also.

That’s true Johnson, I let it go and this week I’m making an appointment with my counselor to find out my class rank.

MJ93, I’m applying to BU, hopefully if my sats go up, I’ll have a better chance. I never really thought of SUNY schools even though I got their brochures in the mail. Anyone in particular that you were thinking of?

the suny university centers (buffalo, binghamton, albany, stony brook) are all good schools and big, which you mentioned. try looking at those. Most other suny’s are located in smaller towns/cities. some are still very good though…geneseo is starting to earn a reputation of a “public ivy.” suny is not a bad option.

What is suny?

SUNY = State University of New York. It’s the NY public college system. There are several SUNY schools.

Hmm, I was thinking about stony brook so maybe I should look into it. Any more suggestions?

Where do you live (or did I just miss that?)

I live in Northern NJ.

Well, if you want to go oos, then the suny system is a definite possibility (unless you were thinking of private schools or a bit further away)

I went to a college fair that was being held at my school yesterday and I think most of the SUNY schools were there. I went there, got some information from them but they didn’t really grab my interest. I wouldn’t mind a private school and I think the farthest I’d go would be MA. (unless I really love the university) I also realized from the college fair, I really do want to go to a college with diversity. I was interested in Marist College until I realized majority are Caucasian (81% according to collegeboard) and I just wasn’t interested anymore.

This may sound stupid but I didn’t realize that a lot more schools lacked diversity.

I finally made somewhat of a list!

o New York University (I can dream)
o Boston University
o Rutgers (New Brunswick)
o Northeastern University (diversity?)
o Montclair State University (too close, safety)
o The College of New Jersey (diversity?)
o Manhattanville College (?)
o Pace University (Not sure if it’s worth $40k a year)
o Fordham University (not too sure about the religious affiliation)
o American University (religious affiliation & lack of diversity)
