Why do I fail at reading but succeed at math?

Why is the Critical Reading section so hard for me?
I always get 7 questions wrong on practice tests on each section on reading comprehension part. I cant seem to even break 500 on CR even though I ace math with 700+ every time.

I read very slowly and I can fully comprehend the passage and I have enough time for the questions but I still get them wrong! This is seriously the most frustrating thing in my life!

Please help me out!

idk 7 wrong per section is pretty strong evidence that you are misinterpreting the main ideas of the passage(s)

7 wrong on each section=21-.25(21)=about a -25 which is about a 560+, so how come you can’t break 500?

The one strategy that I found to work for CR was to eliminate choices. It makes it easier to look for 4 wrong choices than to look for one right answer. Just know that whatever you’re trying to eliminate can’t be supported by the passage. Just ask yourself, “Is there any way that this is the answer?” Look in the passage and try to find evidence. You also might want to look at vocab. You HAVE TO learn new words if you want a good score. You absolutely HAVE to learn new words, otherwise you won’t be able to do so well. As for passages, you’ll usually find yourself getting distracted by the wrong choices. If you CROSS THEM OUT WITH YOUR PENCIL, then it becomes much easier to try and find the right answer. Just try it on your next practice test. Cross out answer choices that you know are wrong. You might look at it and say I know it’s wrong, not cross it off, but still be distracted by it.

^maybe he misses vocab too. He said he gets 7 wrong on reading comprehension. If he misses vocab too, he could easily get belew 500.

Yea I end up missing a couple of vocab questions…no matter how much I study vocab, there are always some new words that come up.

I kinda put it in the wrong way above.

What I meant to say was that on most of the ones that I miss, I can identify and cross out 3 of the 5 choices that are clearly wrong, but between the two remaining, very close choices, I end up choosing the wrong one… :(

Is there a solution to this?

thanks

Do you find yourself deciding between the two choices based on only logic? I’ve found that whenever I make my choice between two answers based on logic, ignoring my first impression and intuition, I tend to get it wrong. Maybe it’s only me, but something to look into. :)

You know what, exactly that happens to me also! I even think about how I always get questions wrong when I don’t go with my first impression but then I have second thoughts and still pick the second impression.

Ok on this next practice test, I will try very hard to go with my first impression of the two.

But, I’ve been practicing and I’m getting better, i get around 550 instead of <500, but thats still fail :(

Hopefully I can break 600 in this one week of death

thanks everyone

Because you have testicles?

^concur .

I feel this way too.

If only Engineers had to take a math/physics SAT and not the english part.

My last two SAT scores were

590r 780m 560w
and
600r 780m 610w

I hate reading and am not that good at vocab because I do not read for fun. For some reason math and physics comes easy to me.

I would suggest just studding those frequently used vocab word lists because that is an easy way to improve. And also the best way to improve is taking the test a lot of times because you get it down and it is always easier the 3rd time.

There is nothing that can substitute practice. Practice increases your familiarity with the types of questions which can come up. Practice really can make perfect when it comes to the SAT.

How do you know it’s a “he”?

Its a 50/50 shot

Because,

(10char)

look at the public profile - it says “M” not “F”

lol you guys/gals are all funny

@schnebar:
I completely agree with you. Thanks for the advice, but that exactly what I’ve been doing the past few weeks. (Great minds think alike  )

My daughter’s math PSAT score was 12 points higher than her reading – should I have her checked out? And, now that I think about it, my son scored an 800 in CR, but only 740 in math. Some weird hormones going on around here.

i’m a guy, 770 critical reading & 710 math

because you’re probably used to doing this level/style of math but this kind of reading never appears in a school curriculum (not where I go at least)

Without a doubt:
