Why do I want to go to a selective school?

What is the benefit of going to a very selective & competitive school for your undergraduate degree, as opposed to a local one and/or a cheap one that doesn't necessarily offer what a top college would but would be easier to get higher grades-

In other words, for a student pursuing business related careers, would it be better to go to a school like UPenn, UChicago, or any of the very top business/econ undergrad programs, or to my local college- U Washington- or a college that gives me a lot of merit aid and try to go to a top business grad- school?

I want to go to UChicago, but does that necessarily mean that I should go as an undergrad, or wait for grad school? (plus they don't offer undergrad b-program)

Grad schools know the average GPAs of selective schools and adjust accordingly, as appropriate. You’ll also have your GRE, etc., scores, and the undergrad school you attend can influence how much you learn (e.g., peer influence and teacher quality), assuming you don’t assume that all undergrad schools are alike.

Interesting. But would it be worth paying $10,000’s more to attend a rigorous OOS than a decent in-state college like UW?

In-state at UW is about $20k per year for total cost of attendance (tuition, room, board, etc)?

What OOS school are you considering that would only be $10k more for total cost of attendance?

I didn’t say 10k, but 10k’s- sorry if that confused you. I was comparing it to some of the colleges with the top undergrad b-schools, like UofM, UPenn, UC Berkeley, etc. My parents can probably pay for my undergraduate schooling, but I don’t know about grad school.

Depending on what grad school and program you go in, you may be able to get fellowships and teaching assistantships that cover the costs.
