Why do many people on CC try too hard to sound intelligent?

It's like everyone here types with a thesaurus.

Some people have great vocabularies.

But the way a lot of people type here doesn't sound natural. This is CC, you're not writing an essay.

It's kinda pathetic, lol.

Most people who type with eloquent vocabulary are not thesaurus huggers, they have simply read and absorbed the qualities of great literature into their own writing style.

I disconcur. Solely a minority of respondents have a parlance that is unduly sedulous in its deliberation to display a semblance of pedantry and intellectualism

^ oh my god you’re really smart

^ I lol’d.

i no rite? Ppl on these site shuld get of there hi-horze and start tiping normel.

bcuz dey have tyme.

You don’t have to type like a complete idiot, Wiscongene and bigblimp.

But people that type like maplesurrup (in a serious way) are annoying. Nobody talks like that. You just alienate people who don’t have time to sit there and try to figure out what the hell it is you’re trying to say, especially when you aren’t even good at using those words, you just think it makes you sound smarter and more intellectual.

Just a little pet peeve of mine :)

The people i’ve seen on here who use words I don’t understand don’t, in my evaluation, do it to sound smarter and more intellectual.

It’s only annoying if you feel envious or something. Otherwise it’s kind of interesting.

It’s not envy or anything. Anybody can learn how to use a complex vocabulary.

It’s just annoying when people say things like “Solely a minority of respondents have a parlance that is unduly sedulous in its deliberation to display a semblance of pedantry and intellectualism” in an online forum. It just makes it harder to get your point across.

Okay maybe your right. I just never found it annoying, and neither was I envious of it, so I thought maybe that was why you did find it annoying.

I agree it can reduce your ability to get your point across if the audience doesn’t know the words you’re using.

But if the audience does understand all the words you use, then increased vocabulary should make it easier to get your point across, cause you can say what you mean more precisely and everything hopefully.

I’m okay looking up words in order to understand what someone is saying. You don’t really want to be bothered with doing that, that’s okay too.

you should just know that people aren’t trying too hard to sound smart, just like how people obviously don’t try too hard to sound dumb. In most cases it’s just how they naturally type

(this thread is of course an exception to all of that :stuck_out_tongue: )

It’s because everyone on the internet is a 12 year old boy.

why do many people on CC try too hard to sound intelligent?

because they are.

@ThousandMiles - Not really. Alot of people try too hard with their vocab to make up for their lack of social or emotional intelligence. A good vocab is such a small aspect of ones overall intelligence. Heaps of people on here also end out sounding awkward and not at all eloquent because they are trying too introduce too many complex words into their sentences.

I swear almost every question on here can be answer with ‘they/you lack social skills’.

What makes you think this?

I agree it is a small aspect. Is does turn out, however, that your score on a certain 10 word vocab quiz is pretty adept at predicting your overall intelligence (if you are okay with the assertion that IQ is a good measurement of overall intelligence). I forget how much exactly, but the point was the predictive power of the short test surprised a lot of people.

So it’s probably not too bad of an indictor of intelligence, the vocab someone uses, even if it’s not a critical part to what it means to be intelligent in the way that we think of it.

Personal experiences with people at school, work and university. So often I find that those people who struggle socially also make a more concerted effort in developing their vocab and pretty much including as many complex words as possible.

Yeah, it’s not a bad indicator of intelligence, but ultimately it’s not your scope of vocab but your ability to use words eloquently which shows intelligence. Have a large vocab is a product of route learning, the skill is using those words at the right time. It’s ok to keep things simple.

I like to be pretentious

Doinks@ Ahoy, fellow Troper!

Big words slip out when I type with proper punctuation and capitalization. Habit from fluffing up my essays.

Why is CC so anti-intellectual? Sometimes it’s nice to use big words while debating whether Asian boys like white girls.
