Why do most college application ask for "current year courses"?

I want to apply transfer in the spring 2013, and I see most application asking for list of current year classes, and indicate the level of those classes.

So if I want to transfer in spring, is it better to take many high level classes in fall 2012 .

I mean is it better to take 15 credits instead of 12 credits (because I have 47.5 credits, and most college only accept 60 transferring credits, I am kind of hard to decide how many credits I should take next semester), or this does not matter.

why do they only ask for current year courses, not past years

Past years coursework will be on transcript, current course aren’t.

If you want to transfer with junior standing, then you should probably have at least 60 credits for most schools. So if you have 47.5 credits of transferable courses, then you need to take at least 13 credits of transferable courses to reach 60 credits.
