Why do OOS Students select USC?

I know USC is very generous with OOS scholarships but what are the other reasons OOS students select USC? I ask this as a instate parent who is wondering how those outside the state view USC.

My d was looking for a warmer clime (we’re in Massachusetts), urban environment, larger school with team spirit, and strong dance department.

There are quite a few Univ of South Carolina boosters here on CC, so that was a good sign for me!

We were both favorably impressed with the campus when we visited (even though the weather was only in the 40s).

We have had beach vacations in South Carolina, so the state already appeals to me from those experiences.

■■■■ from GA

My d very much like fendrock’s, warm climate, big ten football school, nice campus within an urban environment. We live in NJ and we toured schools in the Northeast and then looked South and d was hooked. We looked at a few southern schools but she fell in love with the USC campus. She is so happy there, my husband and I were just saying how she really found a perfect match.

S looked first for a school where his intended major had a national rep, then for merit scholarship opportunities. His visit cemented his choice.Like the others, he was attracted to the urban campus with a bucolic setting, Div 1 sports atmosphere, diversity of students,Southern hospitality, climate,Honors College opportunities. He was advised at the time of visit “you can make a big school small, but you can’t make a small school big” it’s the same thing he tells student visitors he meets now.

Warm climate, beautiful campus, school spirit, big sports, good for several majors she was pondering, and merit aid were all factors she considered. She is a junior and very pleased with her decision.
As parents we have been happy with USC as well. The school is very well run and we have had nothing but pleasant interaction with the administration.
As far as the education goes…she feels that she is getting just what she needs and has been successful in obtaining internships in the summers. Her advisor has been great and she has some amazing professors in her department who have provided some great opportunities to her.
Going back 3 years, would I still have wanted her to choose USC knowing what I know now? You bet!

For our daughter, USC was a perfect fit in so many ways. The campus is a large, urban one, but somehow it is easy to manage and has that traditional campus feel. The grounds nicely combine the old (the Horseshoe area) with the newer buildings. First rate facilities such as the Storm fitness center, performing arts theatre, and even Russell House were also a draw. Academically, USC offered the double major she was seeking at the time (she has since switched majors) as well as a meaningful honors program.

But I think the thing that drew her most to the school was the welcoming attitude of everyone we had contact with – students, faculty, admissions’ reps, and university employees. USC somehow has managed to capture the warmth and close knit feeling of a small school and there is tremendous school spirit. The generous financial assistance shouldn’t be underestimated, however if all the other positive attributes had not been present I highly doubt if our D would have ended up at USC.

We have begun the college search process for our sophomore son and the more schools we visit, the more we appreciate USC.

for us, our states two flagships are too big - like 50K students. so, when DD decided that those two were two big, we had to look around for the things she wanted (school spirit, big football, lots of opportunities, honors program along with possible merit money) but in a smaller setting. while USC is not small, it is compared to our state flagships. we havent visited yet, though. maybe this summer.

so we are looking for other schools where she could get merit $$ that are smaller than our state flagships so that the cost is equal to or less than the cost of our state flagship with no aid.

business school, warm weather, big time football, big school but not to big, greek life, girls, campus, school spirit

IN-STATE TUITION! that is the only reason that i came to USC vs UGA or Auburn (which were my top choices out of my acceptances). I pay next-to nothing to attend USC and it really set the school apart! I love the atmosphere, the football, and my major is #1 in the nation…you cant argue with any of those things!

it really does come down to the money. i’ll be able to save upwards of 130K by the end of my undergraduate education.
