Why do people drink alcohol?

When was the last time you saw a thread on here along the lines of "Why don't people drink?" or "Why don't sober people lighten up?" or things of that nature? Never. Yet there's a thread about the perils of alcohol every week. If this is the attitude taken towards alcohol, I'd love to be in a room with some of you and have someone close by light up a blunt. Madness would ensue.</p>

<p>seriously. these kids on their moral high horses do not no anything about drinking other than the scary videos they showed in high school. Not everyone gets drunk to black out and not everyone drinks because they're unsociable. that is the most ridiculous reason I've ever heard. the unsociable ones are the ones that sit in their rooms and play video games instead of going out with friends or to a party or something or are the ones that have been sheltered from alcohol all their lives .
and yeah i lost 2 uncles to alcoholism. but you know what? im not them and Im responsible with what I do. I was raised to be responsible for myself and have common sense so that i dont have to rely on the media or strangers for advice. Sure you can say one night i might go overboard or something but that could happen with any other activity i do.
I drink because after studying/working/classes 24/7 during the week I want to unwind and have fun. Call me whatever you want, but I do what I want to do in moderation, instead of trying to please others who know little to nothing about what I do.</p>

<p>It's mostly because it helps people loosen up and become a little more adventurous. These things can be done without alcohol though, so alcohol really isn't a necessity ( despite what every college student thinks. )</p>

<p>Alcohol itself isn't bad but people just abuse it, like everything good in life.</p>

<p>Well I do not have a favorable attitude towards the girls who vomit in the bathroom stalls in my dorm especially when the bathroom is next to my room and I can hear it. Yuck.</p>

<p>I do think I have higher moral standards than the girls who brag about not being able to find their panties in the morning. I don't have to worry about missed periods, if I am going to be date raped, if I'm going to do something I will regret, if I destroy my reputation, worry about being blackmailed for drunken pictures (and pictures of me going potty) that I put on facebook 2 years ago, etc. However, I stay out of it. If their idea of having fun is getting smashed at a frat party, then that's fine with me. It's their life and their business. My idea of fun is learning how to do new things (like linedancing), or to hear a once in a lifetime lecture from a famous biologist. So I would expect to be respected for my beliefs in return from those girls and the CCer's on here.</p>

<p>strikes me as funny, a bit ironic, and possibly even hypocritical. Can anyone tell me why nobody sees the middle ground between not drinking and getting blacked out drunk? Alcohol prevention education. Just like abstinence education, it simply does not work. If safe drinking were taught and followed from a much earlier age a lot of what occurs wouldn't happen.</p>

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Kids will drink regardless of whether there college forced them to take AlcoholEdu or has a strict alcohol and drug policy. Colleges could help deal with the issue of alcohol-related deaths by simply properly equipping their students with tips on how to drink safely, rather than not drink at all.</p>
