Why do people think California is hot?

The best part of living in California is how many climates you can have in one day! In March, you camgo from great (or at least lots of) snow in Tahoe in the morning, to “springlike” weather in the valley by noon, then coastal weather in Monterey by evening,

Stanford, which is definitely the best school in California, is in Palo Alto. Palo Alto has a Central Valley climate, and it sucksssssss. Summers when I was there, which was for half my life, would swing from 35-40 degrees (F, in case you were wondering) when the sun rose to 110-115 in a heat wave, 90 at least on a regular day. Oh, I know people who are heading there “for the lovely weather” and I’m all like “dude you don’t even know” and then I describe and they’re like “that sounds great” and I’m like “what.”

And sometimes “I don’t like the heat” (because it gets hot most places in America, too…when I visited Alaska it hit 93 degrees! And then it snowed two days later. Anyway.) is a synonym for “I like my seasons to be fourfold, not ‘wet’ and ‘dry’”.

Incidentally, I love San Francisco proper’s weather, and Monterey and the redwood forests oh my goodness.

I didn’t think it was usually that hot in Palo Alto, but I’ve never lived there.

Here’s what weather channel says about AVERAGE, (not heatwave) Palo Alto weather. I’m think school runs from September to May. Your can check the red box for “record high”.

I dunno. Maybe it’s a faulty memory, but I remember it being truly unpleasant. I definitely remember the thermometer (in the shade) reading 113, which is significantly lower than any of the record highs. Oh, that’s per month. Gotcha. The thing is, it will tend to swing between both of those monthly averages in each day, which, while not proving that it’s hot, I find quite unpleasant. Temperatures should not move more than 20 degrees/24 hours on a regular basis. The couple years before I left might have been screwy from El Nino, too? I remember there being news about rolling brown-outs from people using too much electricity which is (clearly) not usual. First grade was El Nino, I think. Second grade may have been El Nina, and I left for my current location in the August after third grade.

It can get hot in Palo Alto and the San Jose area, yes, but the average temperature is pretty pleasant.

I think the only parts of California that routinely become ovens are the deserts… and there’s nothing there except military bases and the crazies.

High temperature does not mean a lot if you don’t take into account of humidity. Humidity is the killer. It makes you sweat and turn on the air conditioner and stay inside all the time. California is not as humid as TX, VA, MD, NC, SC, FL,… I feel cold in my Californian backyard even during the summer. You feel comfortable all day long in CA Disneyland but not in FL Disneyworld.

Ok but that would suck year-round. A lot of people including myself prefer a climate with 4 distinct seasons. Some people come to Cali specifically for the warm weather, other people wouldn’t like it.

Good lord, I would kill myself, although the heat would probably get me first! For the past week where I live, it’s been over 95 degrees and I can’t stand it. We’ve had 2 power shortages so far! Looking forward to when the weather goes back to it’s usual 70-78 degree range. :)

"… and there’s nothing there except military bases and the crazies. "

Hey! I resemble that remark! (my county has both!)

I think saying our 70-75 sunny and breezy weather “would suck year-round” is a bold statement; sounds like jealousy to me  Sure, it gets monotonous having the same beauty outside all the time, so I somewhat agree since I run on hot and wouldn’t mind experiencing a variety of seasons. But to each their own. I’ve been to your neck of the woods and loved it even though it was a hot humid summer…I’d love to see how fall in NYC is though.

The breeze can be annoying sometimes. I hate those sunny days where it’s too cold to lounge about in the sun.
