why do people waste their time here?

I do understand the merit of logistical or technical questions, but it seems like the majority of posts on this board are completely useless. People asking for chances, people asking about past admit rates, etc. All you people care about is getting in... so you put together the best application you can muster, and submit it. The type of statistics and information which the typical poster inquires about has absolutely no bearing on his admission or rejection.

oh, i know what you mean. i hate those useless posts complaining about everyone else's posts.

ahem

I agree. Why does anybody waste their time questioning the motives of other posters? If you aren't interested in a thread topic, simply ignore it.

One likes to know the circumstances and context of his fate.

Thats true - in the sense that I really like to know what they are looking for and stuff.. and that is why i like to know the stats and stuf... but its really pointless (and sometimes very depressing) if you keep on looking at other people's stats and acceptance rates.. theres nothing u can do about out .. go out and play some sport or something

Why do people waste their time here complaining about other people wasting their time here?

I like hearing people's opinions and tips about their college searches - I've gotten some great info that couldn't be classified as "technical". I'm all for "wasting time" on CC. :-)

it's helpful for my self-esteem to know where i stand in relation to other applicants. That's how data and past admit rates and stuff help.

There's something ironic about the OP's post...I can't quite put my finger on it :). Perhaps he's just a hypocrite?

I disagree completely - the two minutes I spent reading through and analysing this thread intensely were two of the most rewarding minutes of my life - thanks soooooo much for a thread that is soooo worthwhile.

Well to all those that may be depressed at looking at all the stats or who feel this is a waste of time:

I have one, awesome, unparalleled, World-Inspiring Suggestion:
IT'S PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME!!!!

Anyway...the reason people post chances and stats threads is because that's what this forum is somewhat for given that it's about HARVARD...and ppl want advice about HARVARD and their chances, etc...

I want to see what kind of people actually get in. Jee, that'll make me feel good.

i've asked myself the same question and i finally decided that it's because people here DEFINITEly share a VERY SPECIFIC common interest and it just really helps to get all that anxiety off your shoulders =)

Personally I am very very insecure and fear I won't get into Harvard. But maybe if I collect data about 50 other posters on this site and my SAT scores are 10 points above the average, it will make me feel better. I mean, theoretically I could be enjoying my senior year of high school but my entire identity hinges on whether or not I get into Harvard so why wouldn't I spend all my time analyzing my chances?

I think rather than criticize CC, look instead at its merits. Yes there are immature people on the forums, yes there are falsehoods, but it's also a place where people can get a relative handle on their applications, get valuable information (decision dates, etc) much more easily than on school websites, and perhaps, even make friends.

That we're all in the same boats makes us so much more attractive to one another, supporting each other, comiserating...and fending off haters.

My two cents.

oh god, hyper. i see my town isn't the only one where people say "what time is it?" constantly.
i don't know about you, but three of my close friends went through a phase where they sang peanut butter jelly time about 5,000,000 times a day......with a dance routine.

darkstarrising wants attention, hes feeling all alone . Hence this thread.

yeah darkstarring, if it s such a waste of time, what are you doing here wasting yours and not even to talk to people but complain about them...we might be anxious and annoying but you're plat pathetic. no hard feelings though.

In all honesty, CC is a way for me to escape into a world where people spell things correctly on posts and speculate on the merits of educational institutions. It offers a glimpse into a world separate from the tiny mental bubble my town puts itself in. Plus, for mass cyber communication, it's either here or MySpace shudder.

time to waste is a luxury
