I suppose one can parse any number of things in trying to make a case for beating up on USC–rivalries, mascot (in spite of our very un-rich kid, un-SoCal love for Tommy). What I base my appreciation for this school on is pretty simple: Our daughter, who will graduate from Marshall undergrad next year, has never been happier in her whole life. In a weird way, her life started the day she enrolled at USC. It has been a blissful three years, and her future has busted wide open, thanks to that school. There are no end of opportunities, paid internships–when I was out visiting her a month ago, she’d already been offered several, and as we rode together in an Uber, a call came in for her with yet another offer (she was a bit chagrinned as she looked at the number on her phone; she’d had to turn down so many already). Is USC a perfect place? Probably not, but I can only speak from our very personal experience of wanting happiness, profound engagement, and life-changing opportunity for our child: 10s across the board.
@gudmom We live in Florida. Both of my daughters applied to UMiami as well, and both got in too. But USC was far more generous than UMiami in terms of financial aid. It was not even close. It would have cost our family more than double to send each child to UMiami versus USC. Everyone’s situation is different, but in my daughters’ cases, only Emory and Princeton offered more financial aid than USC did. From our perspective… they were quite generous… and UMiami was quite stingy. And for the record… UTexas offered the least… $0.
