Why do some schools have a Why X College essay sent to students after they send their app?

Well, my whole question is above…

I’m trying to understand if these types of essays are as important (or more important) than a Why X College essay that’s on the original application. Do they send it afterwards because they think think fewer kids will apply if they know there’s another essay? Do they send it afterwards just to keep the school on the students’ minds in January?

S19 had two of these and they are both optional. One he sent this weekend. The other he was going to write today and he opened up his app to do it and the deadline had passed to send it in. I looked at his portal multiple times and never saw a deadline. He’s wondering if it’s worth emailing the rep (who he has met) and asking if he can send her his essay today or if that looks worse than just not writing one.

Thoughts?

Maybe the kids that send them in appear to be more interested than the kids that don’t send them in. Some kids might blow them off if they’ve already been accepted elsewhere EA. I think they just show admissions that the kid is still seriously considering the school at this point in time.

“Why [this college]?” essays are ways to check level of applicant’s interest. Presumably, an applicant who does not give such an essay, especially an “overqualified” one, is less likely to be admitted.

Shoot. He’s just not sure if he should ask for an extension. There’s no way to send it through the portal anymore. He’s met the AO and has emailed her before about other things. And he did request and have an interview that he thinks went well. We have not visited though. Not sure if it just looks plain bad to ask for one day extension.

I’d ask for the extension. I’m sure they’ll grant it.

Ok thanks. I just wonder why they don’t have the essay on the application. I guess they get more applications without an essay.

I would ask for the extension too…perhaps in an email with the essay pdf attached

Yes, I’d do the essay and send it in and ask for the extension at the same time. I’d bet they accept it without issues.
Maybe just explain you overlooked it somehow and say sorry but here it is. Done. No need for anything more than that.

This sounds to me like a way to demonstrate continued interest. I would definitely ask for the extension if he is still interested in this school.

The exact wording of the essay is no longer available on the portal though we know it really was clearly a “why x school” kind of essay. He emailed the rep and said he’d like the opportunity to send her the essay today and that he’s hoping she can email him the prompt.

@homerdog are you willing to share the schools that sent this request?

@Eeyore123 I’ll pm you. If anyone else wants to know then shoot me a pm.
