Why do they ask for the other colleges we're applying to, and is that section required or recommended?

I know it’s not required; not sure if it’s recommended.

I assume it’s just for data purposes. I can’t see it harming/helping you very much at all (I’m opting to leave it blank, though).

Maybe if they see that you are applying to HYPSMetc., and they really want you, they would be willing to offer more money to snatch you from those schools. Just my own theory.

Oh no, I thought it was required, and so I filled it out, although I’m applying to Stanford/Dartmouth/UChicago… they wouldn’t reject me because I’m applying to more selective schools, right?

I left mine blank because I’m applying to a rather eclectic mix of schools. People understand my criteria when I explain it to them, but without explanation it looks a little bit schizophrenic and like I don’t know what I want.

Don’t think it’ll make much of a difference either way, though. They probably just want it for cross-application data.

That should not be an issue. I put down what amounted to ten top 20 schools and my safety and ended up getting 3 of the 4 merit scholarships I was eligible for. I think being honest is best since it may actually make you more competitive for merit scholarships if Rice is aware of the caliber of schools you are considering. However, if your list looks like the 8 ivies plus MIT and Stanford, you should be careful of giving the impression that you are not taking their application seriously.

Yeah if they think they’re your backup plan, they might not like that very much, but Rice is one of the top schools in the country anyway, so unless you do like yhappiness said and list the 8 ivies, MIT, and Stanford, you should be ok. I listed similarly respected schools (Vandy, Emory, WashU, Tulane) and my safety.

I really don’t understand the huge amount of worry this question causes, or the seeming inability of prospective applicants to find the multitude of other recent threads about this exact topic.

+1 Dorian.

I applied to 17 other schools and got in just fine. List them.

Moving on.

They should link to a thread about this on the actual application itself.

“Please list the schools you are applying to. For more in-depth analysis on the implications of this question, please see <cc>”</cc>

To see if you’re they’re top choice

I don’t think that is the reason

How would they know?
