Why do U Want to go to UChicago?

Yeah, I'm sure you're right. I guess I'll know whether I even need to worry tomorrow.

ottothecow: "Clinton was also heavily influenced by Hayek's theories."
Clinton was the most charismatic Republican President in the history of the U.S.A.

ottothecow: "And I am pretty sure that they understand that noone was right. . . . Not Marx."
Blasphemer! ;-)

Clinton was a Democrat.

A Republican by any other name would govern a country as conservatively. Welfare reform, DOMA, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"... he was no F. D. R.

(Point being, I'm well aware that Clinton ran on the Democratic ticket and twice defeated opponents running on Republican tickets. The point of my snide remark was that Clinton's economic policies were as heavily influenced by the Reagan-era "Washington Consensus" [which, incidentally, South Americans blame on los muchachos de Chicago, "the Chicago Boys," as in "University of"] as those of Dubya. I don't think of him as a liberal crusader for social and economic justice.)

Clinton was a MODERATE Democrat. Nobody will mix him up with Howard Dean.

If you see him as closer to a Republican, then you might have missed a bit...

people people....don't aruge over parties...argue over ideas. That is what matters. In regard to the economy, the best economy is the one that imitates nature. One example: The American Economic System as it is today (could have been better). Weaker and Less Efficient orgainizations die, strongs and more efficient organizations live & thrive.

Marx and Engles are two great philosophers. But, they factored out one thing about our world. Man is a selfish, greedy *******. Man lives on feeding others, and rising over their dead bodies. Sure, we can all give each other a hug and look out for each other, but with in that puny mind of his, he is always wanting to be on top. In short, Marx doesn't work. History PROVES it.

Of course, I have just opened a can of worms. You can attack me, danielsh. But, please do not take my words out of context.....as our great, kiss ass, defense secretary so often complaints of.

I agree with chicagonobel. While Marxism is a great idea IN THEORY, it just doesn't work. We are not so complacent and selfless as to accept such a system.

But we could be. We just have to get there.

Marxism isn't a great idea at all. To think that revolutionary workers can somehow come together to plan a massive economy without ANYONE attempting to consolidate power is crazy. Looney, in fact. Regulated capitalism= the *****.

Life of the mind.

Merit money sounds almost as good too.

panthermodern, do you really think you'll get merit money there? not saying you won't, its just that those scholarships are so competitive...

why chicago? well, for me, its because of milton friedman.

The great city, rigorous approach to education, international relations & comparative literature offered, excellent music program, really nice dorms, and I love geeky people. Plus the quarter schedule will prevent me from slacking off.

I don't think it'll be any less "social". I'm ridiculously social. I love to meet new people and just chat constantly. I think that UChicago just has a different social atmosphere. While it may not be, "Hey lets get drunk and go to an orgie," there is a social scene thats just abnormal for most college students.

So UChicago is definitely my first choice.

friedman may be acting just out of his own thoughts and philosophy toward economics, and I dont question his integrity, but he is totally a tool of the republican party's big business special interests, who have absolutely no interest in any philosophical notion of anything other than the almighty dollar.
its much easier to hate the social conservatives, but lets not forget that its the rich who've run teh republican party since the 50s, but only now have they realized that they can pass their anti-union, pro fatcat legislation if they pitch a tent which includes gullible religious poor people.

/puts on tin foil hat

Fermi! First Sustained Nuclear Reactor! All sorts of great fun. Nerdiness is respected. I need not say more

Haha, astrobobocop, your post is absolutely endearing. Whoo hoo Fermi! (Btw, he lived in Snell, if you're interested...)

on a sad note, Saul Bellow died this week. He was a chicago grad.

socialism not "natural" ???
well actually, in north america, and on almost every other continent besides europe, it was natural enough that cultures stuck with it for millenia.

Maybe its something about christianity, or about being white, or about coming from europe that makes it feel natural to deprive other members of your species of their livelihood and capital in order that you might have more.

Theres nothing natural about the corporate world today, we cant expect the people in it to behave like human beings like we used to.
gg Halliburton.

I love UChicago because of it's amazing physics program, availability of facilities such as Fermilab and Argonne National Lab for undergrad research. It's physics program is, in my opinion, is better than that of MIT (those guys focus more on engineering). I've been to city once, and it's pretty cool!

greendragon, i like your signature quote.

I picked UChicago because it one, has an amzing debate team, the GREAT city of Chicagoa and i am not from IL, the school is amazing. And i know that i will get great internship experiences.

That wasn't socialism, that was primitive communitarian living. It is incomparable to modern socialism on a state scale.

Because of those "white european christians" (never mind that civilization began in mesopotamia and progressed heavily under Greeks, Romans, and Muslims), Europe was able to evolve past primitive communitarian living and develop division and specialization of labor, exploiting comparative advantages, which in turn yields substantial material returns that enable even the poor members of a modern society to live comparatively well.

It also be noticed that East Asia was an equal (actually for most of history, more advanced) civilization that had even more rigid class distinctions than did the West...

Regardless of the flaws of Western capitalism, human inequality existed among other peoples looong before it.
