the school is actually 7 miles south of downtown. The campus looks very much like a park, and it absolutely doesnt have the feel of city campus' like Columbia. If you dont want to be in a city all you have to do is essentially not ride the train up to downtown Chicago, 'cause on campus it certainly wont feel like you are in one of the biggest American cities.

That sounds really nice. I've actually never been to Chicago, so I don't have a real sense of how the university relates to the city itself, but being in a quieter neighborhood while still having easy access to the city's resources sounds almost ideal.

One wouldn't know he was in Chicago if he stayed on campus all the time. Hyde Park is a close-knit, very diverse community with parks and tree-lined streets; it's quite nice. A fifteen minute walk from campus shows more of Hyde Park's city side, though, with restaurants and more grunginess, though not necessarily in a bad way.

downtown chicago is the $hit

the uchi campus is pretty

biztogo and felipe:

I think you overestimate the effect of selectivity on the US News rankings. According to the website, 15% of the ranking depends on admissions factors. Of those, (by my calculations), average SAT/ACT score counts for 7.5%, percentage of applicants in top 10% of class for 6.5%, and percentage of applicants accepted for only 1%.

Making a relatively small change in something that counts for 1% shouldn't have much of an impact on the ranking.

how about looking at matriculation rate, shouldn't it count for something?

aaaahh! i cant wait another year. screw it. im moving in this fall.

oops, didnt mean to double post

that's alright, I like the sound of your voice

very smart and in love with learning and stuff but not creepy like caltech kids.
[/quote]
Absolutely. I visited both schools, I was distinctly creeped out by the caltech kids, but UChicago felt very nice, like a cold, bug free home, far away from the Ocean.

well, overestimating it or not, it didn't seem to matter... we made the top 10 even without changing our admission practices.

They must have known I'm involved.

Yeah, your milkshake brings all the boys to the yard :-)

It's rank.

I'm new on CC heh but yeah going to U of C nxt year fall!

Why Chicago? Where else for econs? Plus i really love the whole academic eccentric thing going...here's to all weird nerds!

Esquared, you're hilarious. Wait til 07! Then we'd be in the same batch!

I am applying to Uchicago because Tucker Max is my idol.

jck456: There is not possibly a worse reason.

It seems like people either love or hate UChicago. Not me though, I like it. I don't like Hyde Park (I live in Chicago, I know the neighborhood, not good), and I'm really into research but I've heard it's tough to get Chicago's genius professors to actually pay attention to undergrads who want to work in their labs.

But I do like Chicago's atmosphere. I'm no jock by any means, but I'm not a nerd either. I like smart kids with interests in meaningful things, and I know I can find a lot of people like that at UChicago. Chicago is also an amazing city, there's so much stuff to do downtown. I really don't like the idea of being surrounded by wild, Animal House-like frat parties, and I know I won't be at UChicago. I'll probably be eating out in Greektown or seeing a play somewhere or hanging out at Navy Pier, not guzzling beer at UChicago. And that's the way I want it to be.

I also like Chicago's admissions policy. It seems like they actually care about the personalities and interests of the people who apply, not just the SAT scores.

I also like Chicago's academics. Classes here aren't easy, but I think they actually teach you something rather than just give you a nice, grade-inflated average to take home without any real substance behind it. I think I'd learn SOO much here.

So yeah, there are some things I like, some things I don't. But UChicago is an excellent school, regardless of how well I fit there.

mmm same here...i'm not the party sort...what i really want is to meet brilliant ppl with eccentric/intelligent interests...........

and of course, die in all my classes!
