Why do universities want to know whether you apply before or not?

I am just curious. Does that matter at all? Are you going to have less or more chance if you have applied to the same school before?

Going out on a limb, I would say it could show that you’re REALLY interested in going to the school.

I would think that it can only be positive if your application has improved since you previously applied. I applied to UVa out of HS and was rejected, but I applied as a transfer and was accepted.

It allows a school a point of reference to see perhaps why you weren’t accepted the first time (if that is the case) and what you had done in the interim to mitigate any liabilities in your application.

Additionally, depending on how long they keep application materials, it may help speed up the process of locating old scores/transcripts when processing your new application.
