Can they be outside recs?

I was actually wondering the same thing

Hey, do you know if we need to make copies for each of the scholarships or do we just (re)send one copy to the school?

I am disappointed in WUSTLs ability to make decisions off of the Common Applications. In this day and age, if this college could not do this simple stuff, it suggest how backward and bureaucratic this process is! Even the university such as Rice which WUSTL seems to be in direct competition with is able to do this nicely. They dont require separate application for scholarships!

You’re complaining because a school wants a few hundred extra words before giving out 100 to 200,000 dollars per student?? That’s simply ridiculous. Also, Rice has a lengthy supplement to its common application whereas WUSTL does not.

I understand if you are worried about the extent of the bureaucracy at WUSTL. However, being a student at WUSTL, I can guarantee that the bureaucracy is quite manageable for the common student. In fact, last time I checked, WUSTL ranked in the top 25 for the category “School runs like Butter” by the Princeton Review. This means that WashU runs very smoothly despite its size and scope. I understand your concern as I come from a public school in Los Angeles where it was impossible to deal with anything without running into roadblocks set forth by a horribly inefficient bureaucracy. However, this is not the case at WUSTL.

@musicalscientist, do you know if there are different addresses for the various scholarship applications (to send recs)?

I believe that you need to do the following:

For each scholarship, you need to get the recommendations necessary in an individually sealed envelope from teacher/counselor/research mentor etc.

Mail them to the same address, but one set each for the scholarships you are applying to.

Make sure that each envelope is addressed to the name of the scholarship you are applying.

In other words if you are applying to three scholarships at WUSTL, then you will need three sets of two separate scholarships recommendations. Three individual envelops to the same address but with three different names of the scholarships written on it to distinguish them

^artdad is correct; same addresses, but different names.

OH ok, thank you, that clears things up. So should I just write above WUSTL’s address “RE: (name of scholarship)?” Also, this might seem like a small detail, but should I send them in one larger envelope or separately?

Here is what the FAQ says:

Letters of recommendation
Note the number of recommendations needed for each program to which you apply. Use the forms provided, and fill out the Applicant Information section before giving the form to the person providing your recommendation. Ask your recommenders to return the confidentially sealed recommendations to you so you can include all of your application materials in one completed application, or ask them to mail their recommendation directly to Washington University. It is not possible to submit letters of recommendation on-line. Please click here to download the recommendation form(s).

So it looks like you should put everything for each scholarship in its own envelope. Here’s a link for more information: [Online Application Instructions](http://admissions.wustl.edu/scholarships/onlineapplication/Pages/OnlineApplicationInstructions.aspx)

I already have the envelopes from the recommenders, but I didn’t know about the extra forms until after break started; do you think WUSTL will still accept them if they don’t have the form attached (which has just basic info and check marks next to the scholarship that it’s for)?

yeah, i assume they’d just open a file for you. I highly doubt they would throw any application materials away whether or not the application form had been received yet.

Haha ok thanks for the confirmation. I just wanted to make sure :)

Wait, does that mean I have to have a separate rec form for each application as well? Not just separate apps?

So even if I’m doing the apps online, I would have to have 3 separate envelopes for 1 recommender, if I’m applying for 3 scholarships and I need 3 recs from them…

That. is. so. stupid.

yes that is correct^^^^^^^^^

Thanks for the confirmation!

Might consider asking your recommenders to tailor their recommendation letters specifically to the objectives of the scholarship for which you are applying. Might make your letters more valuable and at least make it worth the extra postage.

Yeah, it’s kind of backward. I started looking at the scholarships three weeks ago, reading two months earlier that the transcript would be used from the CommonApp and wrongly assuming that recommendations would be too. Couldn’t even do anything, since my school doesn’t even start until a week past the due date and I couldnt get in touch with the teachers.

I agree that it is backwards and cumbersome.

The sad thing is that I got a letter form them with a phone for a “confidential” talk on “fin aid and scholarships”. When you call, it is just the fin aid. They say scholarship is with admissions (even though the letter said differently). You try to call admissions and is impossible to talk to anyone because everybody is “on other calls”.

The issue is that many students do not have the ability to get multiple rec letters. By folowing this cumbersome process, they are actually discriminating against those who have less support from schools/GC/teachers. It is just sad.

And to the person who said that the $$$ should be worth a few of my words, I reply: My words yes… Mine… Not those of other people.

It was a pretty simple process the if you read the scolarship book they sent months ahead or the directions on the application.

They will not accept the teacher recs without the form completed. There are specific questions on the back for thr teacher and they ask the teacher to rate you in several situations.
