I'm using applytexas to apply to Texas colleges (I think common app is the same). To continue, I filled out my extracurricular activities, jobs held, volunteer activities, etc.. but my counselor wants me to fill out a resume with basically the same information. Why?

It seems like according to their website, U Texas requires its applicants to submit applications (correct me if I’m wrong) so that’s one possible reason. The other reason is that having a resume is useful anyway, especially when applying for future jobs.

Counselors frequently ask for resumes in order to help them write a letter of recommendation for you, as otherwise they have no idea who you are or what you are interested in / good at.

The resume is also an opportunity to state qualifications that are not stated anywhere else in the application.

You may also need to give it to the teachers who write LOR for you. It is always useful to have it handy. Some scholarships require it too.

My kids used the resume as a way to provide more details/expand upon on their experiences and accomplishments as written on the common app. For example they wrote about the responsibilities they had in officer positions of clubs, expanded a bit on their volunteer, included travel experience, and my son put in in some computer skills he had that didn’t fit on the common app.

Having a resume is useful anyway. Even if you don’t need it for college apps, it’ll be really handy later on and it’s good to write down all your ECs and work experience now before you forget it. I wrote a resume for one of my college apps last year and I have used that same resume probably half a dozen times (just today, in fact!) since. So it’s really useful to have.
