Why do you apply as a repeat?

Hi,

I am just very curious about coming across so many posts of students saying they are applying as “repeats”. Why would you want to repeat a grade? What would be the reasons? You are competing for spots with younger and less experienced kids. Does it mean that repeats have better chances of being accepted? It does not sound fare to me, but I am new to BS application process, would anyone care to explain?

Thank you very much for the link!

I was hoping to hear frank answers from some students, not their parents. I understand, that BSs play by their own rules and that once in kids get course placements according to their test results, but competition to enter the BS still does not seem to be fair, when younger students are competing against older ones… but that’s the way it goes, apparently.

I am a repeat applicant for the 10th grade to Andover, Exeter, St. Paul’s, Deerfield, and Choate. I first applied for the 11th, but switched to 10th. I did this because I felt as though I could use another year to establish myself in the boarding school setting (assuming I got admitted) and to have another year to have more extracurriculars and sports. I actually skipped two grades, so my peers in my current 10th grade class are 2 years older than me. Having to repeat another year would be no problem age-wise, since I would probably be the same age or a year younger relative to my peers. Also, I don’t think that repeat students necessarily repeat their classes – they just go on to the next level (with the exception of English, since BS have a different course outline for that).

Well I hope that gave you some feedback from a student who is applying for a repeat year. :)

I am applying as repeat 9th grader because the schools where i live are so bad i think i would benefit by repeating the year. My best friend is currently repeating the 8th grade I chose to do a repeat 9th. People can say it is red shirting but here in the state i am from you hAVE 4 years to play period. I think me trying to jump in with all the 10th graders in BS would be like trying to skip grades and keep up. I am not at their level academically. They have had a better foundation even the ones coming from public schools.
Thats just me.
