WHY do you believe in God?

With all this talk about if you believe in God, can some of you who are religious explain why you believe in the God of your specific religion and why you do not believe in another religion.

I'm hoping for replies from genuinely religious people rather than people who are of a certain religion simply because their parents are, but are not particularly deep believers themselves.

Really, really curious.

Although I'm still skeptical as to whether theres a god or not
I do kind of think "Somebody" made us && theres somebody out here that started all organism on this frikkin corrupt planet

What i don't get is why people believe in God so "Confidently". Like what the hell? There are people who say things that make it seem like they actually saw God. Especially the ones who opresses gays because of what a book says. That annoys me......

Thats why whenever something bad happens, I'm never to quick to turn to God (if there is one)

&& no I'm not genuinly religious but this is from people that I've encountered

PS:: [This is all my opinion so who ever disagrees can disagree nicely]

All I know is, God works in my life. I pray and I see things come to pass.
When something doesn't go my way, I see later on in life why situations panned out the way that they did.
God is a working force in my life and I can't explain it to you any other way.
I'm very loyal to Him and He blesses me.
I don't get angry at him and run away when things get tough.

I am a deist. I believe in some sort of God, or something beyond this life, because it gives me comfort and seems logical. I have not found a specific organized religion that seems logical, but I also see far too much beauty and thought in nature to believe that it all happened by chance.

+1 what Brand said. I am a practicing Hindu though, but I could equally see myself as a Christian, Muslim or Jew without any qualms; in the end, what's important is recognizing that there is something divine and impalpable that's behind or in some way ultimately responsible for our existence. (I believe in Evolution though btw)

i dont believe in any particular religions God, but I do believe that there is a God/some higher power

the reason, is pretty much because it comforts me.
the way i think, even though there's no proof there is a God, its like we will always be too limited to find him anyway. Like the electromagnetic spectrum, we only see a little sliver of it but that doesnt mean the rest of the stuff isnt there and what we know of we only recently discovered. i think theres all these different spiritual dimensions out there that we'll never be able to find, like ghosts exist on one of them and like all the paranormal stuff and that dejavu are because they get onto our level like accidentally or maybe purposely? thats the best way to say how i feel about it.
and i think the mind is like crazy powerful too its not just going to go out like nothing was ever there. just because you dont see something doesnt mean its not there anymore. like you burn a piece of paper but that doesnt mean the words never existed and they're still in your mind theyre just not visible.

has anyone heard of this? im not sure if i believe it...
http://www.snopes.com/religion/soulweight.asp

ad.bc, I think the reason that the dead body is lighter when dead is because when you die your body releases fecal matter and other things. Your body also losses water according to what I've heard. But still, the whole soul thing scares me yo.

In many ways, I feel the same way you do ad.bc. (and imran and Brand.)
However, there are people who will insist on a particular religion and I don't quite get that. I really, really want to understand why that is.
Or at least, get a glimpse of why.

Any true Christian believers or Muslims out there? Or devout Buddhists? Why is it that you so strongly believe in your religion?

But the releasing fecal matter and water loss was accounted for (the weight gradually decreased while the patient was dying). If I've read the article right, I believe the oddity was that there was a sudden inexplicable drop in weight when the patient finally died.

Kind of creepy, I agree.

reverberates is exactly the type of person that makes me hate this type of discussion.

completely evades the question.

actually he did answer the question the OP asked.

"I pray and I see things come to pass."
^^that basically justifies why he believe in God

Please, lets not talk anymore about souls && focus on Religion because I won't sleep well at night

Has anyone ever read C. S. Lewis's non-fiction books on Christianity?

roxxy: I've read 1 or 2 of them. They're really good.

Check out the reviews:

Excellent books. He's well known for his Narnia series, but few people know of his non-fics. He was a "devout atheist" in his youth and then experienced a huge Saul/Paul-like change later on in life. Fascinating man.

roxxy: If you have the book, mail it to my job. PM me for my job address ;)

I am atheist. I do not practice a religion. Some would say I do not have a faith. But I do have faith itself; faith in the future, and faith in myself.

I see the world in philosophical terms. I believe that is enough.

SA:

Sorry, I unfortunately don't own the books. I've borrowed a few out of my local library, however.

You should check them out!

OK, in response to reverberates: You write, "God is a working force in my life and I can't explain it to you any other way." That's fine if it's merely your personal relationship to a deity. (I'm assuming that you are a Christian; correct me if I am wrong.) Let's assume that you so strongly believe in your God because as you write: "I pray and I see things come to pass.
When something doesn't go my way, I see later on in life why situations panned out the way that they did."

I'm sure that people of other religions have had the same experience. Muslims with Allah, Buddhists with bodhisattvas, heck even the gods of ancient pagan religions! They pray and sometimes their prayers are answered and sometimes not. Why are those religions wrong? Your own, "I can't explain it," argument just doesn't quite work. (If you meant that as an argument in the first place that is...)

I'm not trying to inflict upon myself an "Athiest persona" but i really do think the so-called "answered prayers" are just mere coincidences. Why do you guys think that good people's prayers don't always get answered when they should?

Thats because I think its not prayer, Luck just didn't come at that time.

PS:: Once again, this is my opinion so if you're going to disagree, disagree nicely

Haha So Authentic, I wasn't implying that I believe in prayers if that's how it came off. For one thing, I just can't quite make up my mind which deity (the Christian one? The Catholic one? Mary? Jesus? Buddha? Allah? Apollo? Or the Flying Spaghetti Monster?) I should pray to.

My point is exactly yours.
