Why do you bother to apply?

After reading some people say that "it's always been X school over Y school" especially in the Berkeley vs. UCLA game, why the hell do you guys even apply to the school you know for you you will not be attending? Especially if that school is Berkeley-- if you get in at Berkeley, you most definitely will get in at most UCLA majors.

Some of you can't leave to Berkeley for other obligations but still choose to apply. . .why take up spots and give the adcoms more work for nothing?

Are you egomaniacs or what's wrong with you making the pool more competitive? Do you have some unfulfilled desire to say, "I got into CAL but I chose to go to UCLA instead. . ."

Grow up.

Well, I felt uncertain of getting into Cal or UCLA so I applied to both though I do have a first choice.

I don't think getting into Berkley=getting into UCLA.

hmm... lolwut?

I think people like to leave their options open. Who knows how different you might feel in April as opposed to when you apply in November.

fergusson,
almost everyone who applies to more than one school still has a favorite or a dream school. W/ ucla vs cal it is no different, you have ones that would prefer one over the other but there is no guarantees at either school, I've seen people get rejected at UCLA & accepted at Cal & vise versa, and thats the reason why they apply at both even if they prefer one over the other. I don't think most people want to waste time and money applying to different schools just to say they got in. Also sometimes people's circumstances change after getting accepted and they have to go to a different school 9work,family obligations, etc.)

NO U!!!

D:<

Also, options.

ETA: Also, listen to above post ^ She's a smart lady.

furgesson, they do it to make you angry

Great post luvtoolearn. I am a living example of someone whose circumstanes changed, as you mentioned in your post.

In reality you have to leave your options open because you don't know what might come up.

I've been set on attending Cal for a long time now. As enthusiastic as I was to attend there, my wife was looking forward to moving up there more than me! I had zero desire to attend UCLA. Guess what? The budget cuts happened this year, my wife teaches elementary school, and we're staying put in the Los Angeles area now.

So it's UCLA for me. Thank God I applied there, even though I had no intention of going, or I would have totally screwed myself over.

Also, I'm guessing the $60 application fee is at least somewhat of a profit source for the various campuses. So don't boohoo the adcoms too much. The more apps they get, the better to them.

I'm sorry if the reason behind your post is that you got rejected from the school of your choice, or have low self-esteem/confidence in your own work in school with Cal decisions coming out tomorrow. But it is foolish if we don't apply to a handful of schools, regardless of where we want to attend.

I completely agree w/ you Ed.... lets take it even further, can you imagine people only applying to one grad school simply because thats the only one they really like? I really want to go to Tulane for law school becuase they have the best sports law program in the country, but realistically w/ a family I am applying to multiple schools because I don't know what my circumstances will be next year and if my husband gets into Cal I'm going to have to defer anyway, point being... you never know what will happen tomorrow let alone several months from now.

Exactly. Five months is plenty of time for circumstances to change drastically. Applying elsewhere is a necessary precaution.

Thanks for your obvious lack of knowledge regarding my stats Edward. :) It brings amusement to me.

So I ask you: since you are not going to be going to Berkeley, you aren't going to check whether or not you got admitted, am I correct? Or do you want to feed your ego?

furgesson... I find it amusing that you only addressed Ed,
actually he is looking to see if his wife can find a program out here to teach at, but in case he doesn't find it he was planning on going to UCLA so I would assume that he still will check all his options, including Cal
sorry to but in Ed

Yea, I like how you ignored all other anwers to your question and choose only one poster.

And why would anyone bother to research your stats. Your post does come off as insecure and it seems like Ed picked up that tone too.

furgesson, my crystal ball malfunctioned right when you made your post so I was unable to check your stats. Sorry.

Your entire premise that if someone checks their admission status it implies a need to feed their ego is off base. So again, whatever is behind your low-self esteem or self-confidence that is causing you to feel this way, I am sorry. That is only something you can change. Attempting to personally attack others isn't going to help you achieve a healthy level of either of those qualities. Good luck to you though.

furgesson,

College admission do account for the fact that some of the acceptees will not attend their university such that they will accept more students than they can admit. If their statistics show that more students who were accepted to attend to their university, they will reduce the number of their acceptances.

In general, people who apply to two or more universities do not "steal away" a spot from another applicant.

Many here apply to both Cal and UCLA just in case if one of them rejects the applicant, not to feed their ego...especially if they came from CCs (runs away from the flames).

lmao....... fantastic post Ed!

luvtoolearn,

That is exactly right! We are still planning on visiting Berkeley if I am admitted, for the same reason I applied to multiple schools...to keep our options open! My cousin who is only about a month apart from me in age and is pretty close to me lives in Berkeley right now as well. So we're looking forward to a nice visit.

I hear what you're saying about grad school too. I am set on attending UC Irvine for grad school for various reasons taking place as of this moment and really don't want to go anywhere else. I will not be taking the furgesson approach and only applying there though. Speaking of ego...my ego isn't big enough to think I can only apply to one grad school and be safe on being accepted. That would be foolish, plus I think the wife wouldn't be pleased with that. I like to live dangerously, but I'll definitely be applying to multiple grad schools. : )

We will be lucky to have you... if you do decide to come here to Berkeley.. pm me and we'll do lunch =)

do u know that...
1. the fee waver allow u to apply free to 4 campuses
2. All CA residents who meet the minium UC requirement and is not accepted to their school of choice will be admitted to either.... UCM or UCR...
3. if u're guaranteed to be admitted to either UCM or UCR.... why would u apply to those school?
4. So, most ppl will apply to other campus.... the 4 campus ... I applied to are D,< SD < LA < B
(althoughI don't have a fee waver...!)

furgesson,

Did you only apply to one school? I couldn't even imagine how nervous that would make me.

Btw, my boyfriend of three years was accepted at Berkeley and rejected at UCLA. I was dead set on attending UCLA, but allowed him to talk me into applying to Berkeley. Guess where I ended up....
