Why do you choose a top university?

That’s a big factor. And in general, if you’re really good, really committed, and really passionate about something, it’s very frustrating and unfulfilling to be part of a population that doesn’t care about it as much as you do. If you’re a musician, an actor, an athlete, a chess player, a debater of political issues, an activist on social issues - whatever your gift or passion, you want to be challenged and stimulated in an environment in which others feed off your energy and give you theirs. Otherwise, you spend a lot of time thinking how much better you could be getting if you had access to that kind of setting.

One thing about high academic performers - sometimes it is hard to get a word in edgewise in the class discussion with those kind. One can be a high academic performer who is also introspective and quiet - one of the expected traits of a scholar, btw. I wonder if it would also follow that those kind of aggressive and competitive high performers would also get the limited research and intern opportunities over the less aggressive students.

Does that mean I should date someone based on their SAT score or US News ranking?

Oldish post, but I couldn’t resist.
