i got into cornell eng ED. i have also applied to illinois urbana champaign and uc berkeley, none of which were ED or EA. i have not gotten notification whether i have gotten in to either schools. i am wondering if i can wait to see if i do get into illinois or berkeley and then withdraw my app. or do i have to withdraw them asap.

Why do you have to withdraw your apps?

Gee, because you told them you would? See the admissions website (in big type, not even buried in small print):

"Remember that an early-decision application is a commitment. You can apply under early decision to only one college or university. If you're accepted at Cornell, you must withdraw any applications sent to other schools and send your acceptance deposit by January 7."

also, my counselor showed me what cornell sends the GC office after decisions have been sent to applicants, its like a list of the names of kids at your school that applied and if they got in or not (she showed me b/c i was the only one that applied early) and preceeding that information was about two paragraphs in which the first paragraph said something like "We are very strict in our binding early decision program and fully expect that all other applications will be withdrawn" similar to that, not quite exact, but yeah, you must withdraw other apps.

If you withdraw, you are allowing them to accept another student. It's the right thing to do.

why wouldn't you withdraw them? not like it matters if you get in

how exactly does one go about withdrawing applications?

Well, on Cornell there's a withdraw link, so I assume it's the same for many other colleges. Otherwise, you probably just call up admissions.
