ok so I know this is a "college" discussion board. But since I'm sure most of us drive back and forth to school, I wanna know why so many Americans cruise on the left lane. its for passing only. It's even ILLEGAL in a dozen or so states (mines included).
so yea. seriously. enlighten me.

A friend of mine prefers to drive in the left lane. He has really bad ADHD, and I think it has something to do with people generally being more widely spaced in the left lane. So, if he forgets to pay attention to the road, it’s less likely he’ll have an accident. I think that’s his reasoning, anyway.

Well, to be totally honest, I get out of the left lane, UNLESS someone (Usually a bmw, they have no idea how to drive) is tailgating me, and then I will find the nearest slow-semi and pace it for as long as I can without inconveniencing the innocent drivers.

You know how Jersey is. People used to use it only for passing back in the day, but what with the whole “most densely-populated state” thing, people just converted it into a regular lane. Albeit one that goes faster.

Some people just suck at driving. That’s why you go to the exclusive left lane. Sure some people will tailgate you at 60 mph, but that’s the price to pay to get to your destination on time.

Does Jersey still have that program where if your average speed from the entering tollbooth to the exiting is over the speed limit you get a ticket?

I lived in Wyoming, only a small strecht of the I-80 have more than 4 lanes. But traffice never seems to be a problem there.

Even though I’m from Europe, first time I was caught in a snowstorm I was shocked. I was driving a pretty good car (a Toyota 4Runner, brand new, anti-freezing applied on windscreen), and giant trucks would pass me at 60mph+, even with low visibility. I was crossing the Rockies, 8.200 ft high on I-80, and they just kept speeding up and blowing snow on me! And there were no safe place/rest area nearby, I could not pull over because of plowing vehicles… It was frightening. I never left Laramie do drive do Denver again at night without checking weather channel website.

Apart from that, I travelled a lot without any traffic jam problem. Only near Denver or Salt Lake City I’d find some heavy traffic. Best road trips of my life I had in Wyoming, though Utah’s and Montana’s roads had better maitenance. Ah, and for the record, my Wyo’s driver’s license was the fast official license I ever got - less than 1 hour for applying, taking the written test, and immediatly after the road test, then the D.L. on the spot…

** And everyone seemed to keep left whenever possible **
