I'd like to hear (from current of students if possible) - why did you choose Dartmouth? Is it everything you've ever wanted and more? I am currently deciding between a couple schools (none of which were my first choices..) and want to know.. what do Dartmouth students love about the place? What makes it unique and fantastic?

(Also.. is there a good-sized sober community at Dartmouth?)

The professors are here because they want to teach. I have had profs (who are very legit and famous) sit down with me for a solid hour to tweak my essay outline. They really care that you are learning.

The other students are awesome. People are super intense and hard-working without being obnoxiously competitive or rude. The social environment is fairly laid-back, especially in comparison to other Ivies.

FLAIR.

The food is DELICIOUS, especially for college food. (I took orgo at Harvard and almost starved to death.)

We have snowball fights on the Green at midnight.

The study abroad program is arguable the top in the country. It is organized through Dartmouth and you receive full College credit.

SOPHOMORE SUMMER.

There are so many amazing classes that I want to take and I will never fit them all in.

They sell homemade rice krispie treats in cafe in the library.

FRESHMEN TRIPS.

We are the only people who play pong the right way. (You can totally play pong with water. I pledged a Greek organization dry because of athletic commitments and it was a complete non-issue. Some people drink. Some people don’t drink.)

When all else fails you can always just blame it on the boogie.

There’s a story in The Mirror (The D’s weekly arts supplement) from a couple of years ago that I love. Written from an upperclassman’s perspective, it reminds the reader why Dartmouth is such a great place. This is my favorite example:

Dartmouth is such an unpretentious, inclusive place. I’m always amazed they can achieve this while being a world-class university. And, by the way, for those who think Dartmouth’s in the middle of nowhere: You’ve got summers, off-terms and study abroad (as well as the rest of your life), to live in a big city, but you’ll probably never again have the opportunity to be part of such a stimulating, supportive and cohesive community.

yeah! I saw that a couple weeks ago…it’s really beautiful. Do you know if it has a good cognitive science/ pre-med program tho? I’m trying to decide b/t Dartmouth and Northwestern.

I decided to go to Dartmouth, one of the last places I had thought I’d end up, because when I visited at Dimensions, the students were so happy to have us prospies there, everyone made me feel so welcome, the class I sat in on was amazing, and everyone just seemed so happy and full of love for Dartmouth. I love sophomore summer, the D-plan, study abroad (do it…amazing experience) and the fact that all the students bring these completely amazing experiences to the table, but are totally humble about them. I also love the passion people have, not just in the classroom, but in every endeavor they throw themselves into. And I chose Dartmouth because I saw a taste of all that in the one weekend I visited, and i still love it because all those things have proven true a million times over.

As for the sober thing…drinking is over emphasized…such a non issue…yes, Dartmouth students drink, but no more than students at other schools. Its just that our social scene tends to revolve around greek life, and the stereotypical greek scene is booze or bust, but Dartmouth does not at all have the stereotypical greek scene.

@hhhhs10 - I was PMing pshan for a while before…yup, she’s at darmouth and loving it like the s**t. She’s actually glad she got rejected from Harvard and Yale.

Just another example of how you’ll always love where you end up at.

Oh, and don’t worry, she isn’t part of that “sober” community, which apparently barely (if at all) exists at dartmouth

yeah! I saw that a couple weeks ago…it’s really beautiful. Do you know if it has a good cognitive science/ pre-med program tho? I’m trying to decide b/t Dartmouth and Northwestern.

The cog-sci program is really good from what I have heard, and they have an MRI that undergrads can use to do research, which is apparently pretty incredible.
The premed advising is really good and Dartmouth has a great med school acceptance rate. Also, since Dartmouth is so undergraduate oriented, it’s so much easier to get research opportunities: you can just blitz (email) or go to the office hours of a prof you had (or haven’t even had, but are interested in their research) and ask them to work in their labs and it works out a lot of the time.
