Why do you love Indiana Bloomington?

I am just curious to know why the students love the school, something that's not written in the catalogs.
I read that student's report about how bad it is, but I don't buy it
Please if any IU Bloomington could tell me I'd appreciate it

You'd probably have better luck posting this in the IU forum ...

And what student's report? I'd take any review, negative or positive, with a grain of salt.

(going to be an IU student in 09)
There was a student who posted a review in the IU forum who expressed their dissatisfaction with IU and gave some insight on their view of the drinking and other issues IU has. I believe they were legit issues, but one persons take may be harsher on them than the nexts.

According to one web site that surveys students, Indiana was in the top 20 schools for the following;

18 Their Students (Almost) Never Study Academics

#13 Best College Newspaper Extracurriculars

#6 Lots of Hard Liquor Parties

#8 Party Schools Parties

#16 Happiest Students Quality of Life

If this is telling the whole story, it's a very sad commentary.

A scientific survey--NO. It's PR that just likes to sell books with some goofy surveys that are completely unscientific. It's a sad commentary that anyone puts any weight on this garbage.

And barrons, exactly how much of THIS web site would you say is scientific?
Everyone on here realizes these are just opinions. Obviously you don't like this one! I would list my source outright, except often times references to other web sites are deleted. This source's initials are P.R. and it's listed in the book "366 Best Colleges".

I know it's from PR. They are the worst offender. Anyone can go the survey site and vote even if they never set foot on the school. 2008 Student Survey

IU is what it is. Is it a party school? It can be. However; I'm a High School student in Indiana and most people around here don't consider it the number one party school (I'm not even sure if it would be considered number 2). All schools have parties, some are more wild, some are more calm. Some have tons of liquor, some have beer, some have non-alcoholic refreshments. But they're out there. If it's said they don't study, well some students probably don't. Students don't study at my high school now. Those who won't to succeed will study, and those who are wasting their own, the schools, or more than likely their parents, or someone elses money to party; well the probably won't. As far as the others, those speak for themselves.

I don't attend IU, nor am I saying it's the best school out there. I can't even say I "love" it yet. I'd have to be there to love it. It's a school just like the other thousands and you can make the best of it or not. If someone likes the glorification of a Big Ten school that has something the others don't then they come to Indiana and realize, hey this is boring. Or Hey. This isn't what I wanted; and then they don't adapt or transfer. They could have a bad time. these are just my opinions as are the results of the survey; but the OP wanted opinions so.

I too however; would like to hear why some current students love it because I hope to be there soon.

I went to IU. Yes, there are lots of parties. I don't think it can hold a candle to the amount of drinking (and lack of consequences for underaged drinking) at my son's Ivy.

It is a beautiful campus in a perfectly-sized college town. It has some of the top programs in the country- mainly business and music. It has great basketball. There is a strong frat scene but plenty of people don't go Greek so it isn't an issue if you aren't into that. There is ALWAYS something to do on the weekends. The student union is amazing. Little 500 is probably the best college weekend in the country.

The negatives (in my opinion)..... I felt a lot of the freshmen were not particularly bright- and they got weeded out after a semester or a year. It is harder to get into now, so maybe it isn't quite as bad. By the time you get into your major (soph year or so), you don't notice this as much. There was some emptying out of the dorms on weekends as kids went home to Indianapolis or Jeffersonville etc.

My son attends IU. While I can't say he "loves" IU, he does love the music school at IU. He has some terrific teachers (not all, of course, but a lot), he is around some amazing musicians, and he has lots of opportunities to play and listen to good music. That makes it a great place for him. He likes the town and has a nice house he is now renting with a couple friends. His negatives: too much partying, kids who don't care about school (but not much of that in the music school), the size of the university, the lack of parking, the weather--more extreme than he is used to. That's about it. And most of those negatives can be found in many large universities, not just IU.
