Why Do You Self-Study AP's?

Is it just to appeal to colleges, get the credit, or do you actually have an interest in what you're learning?

Self-studying AP classes is a waste. In my opinion. I don’t self study APs. In my school, people got into Stanford and Princeton without Self-Studying any APs.

Just take the hardest classes that your school offers and take some summer classes for high school/college credit at a local college.

Okay, now that Literature has stepped up and said what I was worried I would be berated for saying, I can go ahead and agree with her/him. I guess I could understand why people feel the need to self study if they go to one of the schools that only offers two or three AP classes, but that doesn’t seem to be the case most of the time. And even if it is, people need to realize that colleges get high school profiles and know exactly what courses are offered at your school, so there’s no need to panic about not having 10 APs if they aren’t offered.

I also think it would be reasonable to self-study if you’re extremely concerned about money and hope to use your AP credit to graduate early and save, but I’ve never heard of anyone self-studying because of financial concerns (plus anyone that worried would probably get a lot of financial aid anyway).

Mostly, I think the people who self-study either have way too little self-confidence and think lots of APs will help colleges like them (though they’re probably already good enough without additional tests) or have way too much self-confidence and are just trying to brag to the world about how darn awesome they are at everything.

If I had a chance to endure the rigorous classes of AP I would do it for the learning aspect. My school does not carry APs :(.

Because if i didn’t i could live with myself or come on these forums :0

I don’t and I had never heard of anyone doing it until this site.

I self studied AP Chem because ChemE is my major and I wanted to get pre-reqs out of the way so I can take higher departmental classes where you’re not in a lecture hall and you have better access to your professor.

Not everybody is so shallow.

I self studied, but it counted as a credit on my transcript as well. I taught myself for an entire period everyday because my schedule conflicted with the lecture period. I just did it because I liked the class.

Doesnt that just make you look less appealing? Like youre going out of your way to get admissions to like you?

I’m only going to study the things that I find interesting and will be helpful in college. For example, most colleges take AP western language credit (or atleast partial) so that knocks out some credit. I also do it so that it doesn’t take up one of my classes, like what’s the point of taking biology, and then AP biology? Might as well just self-study it. As long as you find passion in the subject, you’re not ‘going out of your way to get admissions to like you’.

Yikes, I just found out that you can self study for AP test from you guys and from CollegeBoard. Gesh where was I for the last few years :/. Anyways, am planing to self study for US History, World History, and Government and Politics in the United States.

JosiahAd: why?

Answer: They’re obsess with trying to top everyone else and fuel their college fire!!!

^ What they said.

I have not heard of a single person in my entire life self-studying a class up until I went on CC. And personally I think it’s kind of ridiculous (the only exception is if you’re school doesn’t offer it and you’re taking it because you have extra time).

^what if you wanted to get college credit without paying a fortune to take the class?

I self study because AP Chem is not offered at my school and self teaching it to myself will help me prepare for the SAT2 that I need to take. As a bonus, I can write the AP test too.

I am self studying Physics C because I have finished calculus and grade 11 physics and don’t want to waste my time taking grade 12 physics which is all algebra based. By going the calc version, I can prep my calc skills, learning physics concepts properly and just write the grade 12 diploma.

The statement on applying for AP test is for expanding my general knowledge on the units of US History, World History, and Government and Politics in the United States. Likewise, I am also going to take a Political Science Major in college as well and with the AP studying I endured I would have a certain acumen for my Poltical Science Major. Lastly, my school does not have AP classes so self study is the only way to take the AP exams.

I am because I want to challenge myself!and yes I want to increase my chance of admission!if you don’t find it useful please don’t criticize those who do!

^^ I agree to :).

If I had done it, it would have just been for the credit. If I was actually interested in the subject, I took the class. And as I mentioned in another thread, the only time I picked an AP just for the grade and not because I enjoyed the subject was when I took AP Chem, and I ended up REALLY regretting it.
