Man, I am so upset. I was waitlisted for Wharton. The single biggest killer on my application is my GPA. It is a measly 3.4 (4.0 for Junior and Senior Year!) and my rank is just north of 200 out of 500. Oh well, I might try to transfer next year. Why do you guys think you get rejected, deferred, or waitlisted?

i think i got deferred because of the other applicants lol. I actually believe that I couldn’t have done anything better because english is my 3rd language (I’m moroccan)… Sometimes you compete with people that are better then you, and according to the Admissions Officers, a lot of people were stronger applicants than i am. Am I sad? Yes, extremely. I gave my penn application my all. However, I’m confident. I know I’ll end up in a great school… I don’t know if I’ll do wharton for graduate school though… don’t want to go through all that crying again… especially because I wanted to go to Wharton ever since freshman year (year when I came to the US ). It’s an enriching experience though. Some of you might say this guy is talking as if he got rejected… well… looking at all the other applicants that got deferred for wharton I’m pretty sure I don’t have a big chance of getting accepted… so I do expect a rejection on march 28th…

My math scores were too low to get accepted ED to Wharton and I don’t have any amazing ECs / hooks. I’ll take the deferral though, was expecting rejection so it is still a plus.

because im not black

Tough applicant pool. Wasn’t even the most qualified Wharton applicant from my school.

what does it mean to be waitlisted in Early round?
is it the same as being deferred?

SAT I and II average, International, Chinese, I think my ECs saved me from an instant rejection.

GPA, not question about it. I had solid ECs, letters of rec, SATs, and even some alumni connections.

I love Wharton, but a good reason I applied was because of a higher-acceptance rate - This makes deferral less painful as there are still a handful of schools I’m really interested in and would love to attend- Acceptance in RD will be an unexpected treat.

Got rejected from Penn (wharton). My weaknesses were probably my class rank and GPA (they weren’t that bad, but not amazing at all). Other than that, I don’t know, all my other stuff was in order and very good. Unlike most, I am pessimistic about the RD round for other college, I don’t think my app has that “thing” for the top schools.

GPA… I thought I could make up for it with my amazing SATs/ECs lol but guess not. Sigh~

Applicants are not waitlisted in the early round. If not accepted or rejected, they are deferred.

If you were black, your other stats would be weaker and you still wouldn’t get in.

@worried guy: it’s not b/c you’re not black – it’s because Penn saw tons of other applicants just like you and at this stage, your app isn’t unique enough for them to give you the nod. You’re not competing against black applicants just like you’re not vying for the spots set aside for recruited athletes, development admits, celebrities or music prodigies.

Whose spot does the recruited footballer take? The less qualfied footballer or the less academically strong footballer – not your spot.

Whose spot does the admitted international kid take? The less qualfied or less interesting international applicant – not your spot.

Whose spot does the admitted black applicant take? The less qualified black applicant – not you.

If I were addressing a rejected or deferred black applicant, I would tell him that his spot was not taken by an athlete or a musician or a science/math whiz or even just some Wonder Bread strong all-around applicant (like you) – his spot was taken by another more qualified/interesting black applicant.

@Philo
Not sure if racism?

@drac313: same here…devastated…i’m pessimistic about my RD round for other top schools too…

If I do get rejected/wait listed it will definitely be because of my very low CR on the SAT even though my Math is very high. I hope being Hispanic plays to my advantage in this situation.

@Philovitist

Huh?

Fallacy detection, criticism, etc.

philo… that was the most ignorant comment i have ever heard on CC.
