I was just curious why everyone think they got into UCLA.

Here's some of my stats:
SAT: 2030
GPA: 4.5
Extra-Curriculars: MUN, CSF, KIWINS, and a few other clubs
Essay: One about being a vegetarian and the other about my parents

UCLA is known for being really weird with their admissions and though I am really happy to have been admitted and going this fall, I was surprised that some people I know who didn't get in. People who had higher GPA's more extra-curriculars, and higher SAT scores in my class got rejected. The only reason that I think that might have given me the edge is that my essay was pretty good. Did this happen to anyone else? What are your stats?

…maybe it was the essay. It conveyed my thoughts beautifully. And those two words made me a perfect “fit” in the UCLA community. plus it’s “original” :D

Uhh, honestly >_> I think it’s because I’m international and they wanted my money. My essay, now that I reflect on it, was utter crap and completely unoriginal. I think my stats helped but still, I think it’s the money. Ha.

Salutatorian
UW GPA: 3.96
ACT: 35
SAT: Physics - 800 // Maths II - 800 // Chem - 760
EC: Student Council, sports teams and most of the other “usual” stuff.

Haha, I’m not too familiar with international/oos stats, but my other acceptances/rejects make me wonder if schools just want me for my money heh.

Honestly, I don’t know. I have very little extracurricular, an “eh” SAT, a decent GPA, and one of my essays was crap.

The only thing that was different about me was maybe one of my essays. My second essay, though not the longer one, was very sincere and showed how I changed as a person.

I guess when UCLA saw my app., they were on the verge of rejecting me and saw that essay. I know I was on the borderline because they sent me an email asking me about my 1st semester senior grades, as well as additional optional essays.

So… hah! I’m at the bottom of the food chain for UCLA, but who cares! I’m shockingly aggressive, so watch out. ^_^

I had a high GPA and SAT scores, but practically no extra-curriculars and “okay” essays. I think your major has a lot to do with it…it’s a lot more competitive for pre-med students.

welll. i had a 4.2 gpa, and my highest SAT score in one sitting was a 2000
i scored a 710 on one subject test and a 720 on the other. in my opinion, my stats are on the lower end of ucla’s acceptances.

there were other people at my school who had over a 2100 sat score and a higher gpa than me…but they were still rejected. i was ranked about 30 out of 200 in my grade at my school while some others were ranked 5 or 6 but were rejected. i know ucla doesn’t look at rank, but this does show that other people had higher gpa’s than me and a higher SAT score but were still rejected.

i was rejected from schools i thought i had a better chance of getting in than ucla.

i believe the reason i got in over the just as qualified students from my school were two things-
my essay
my extracurriculars

my essay was really good, and i worked really hard on it. i believe it was original, interesting, and really showed what type of person i am, and i believe ucla took this into major account and saw that i seemed a fit for their school…
also, i had extracurriculars that i had been committed to since freshman year. i put a lot of time into volunteer work, and i believe this really had a lot to do with my acceptance.

soo ucla does NOT only look at gpa and test scores…
it seems every student who got into ucla from my school is very well-rounded…involved in a lot of activities and don’t just spend their time studying.

i think i got in because of my commitment to sports? i didn’t have all those clubs or anything (i was involved with sports throughout the year everyday after school so no time for clubs, while i wasn’t interested in any in the first place) i had a decently high gpa and good rank in my school… while i kinda believe UCLA pick people like me with lower scores to fit people in the bottom half of the curve :p

True Story: I was in ELC and UC Irvine gave me guaranteed admission by like september, so I really blew off putting much thought into my application. I just put down what they wanted to see and jazzed up the essays a bit just so it wouldnt seem as if I was the wrong candidate/a babbling idiot. I qualified for a waiver so I got to select 4 schools that I wanted to send in the app to. Irvine was pretty much the only one I was planning on; I put down UCSD because they gave me ELC as well and I essentially just wanted the fancy stationary of another acceptance letter. I didnt really care about the other two spots. I left one blank and put in UCLA for fun; Ive wanted to go there when I was younger, but didnt think I could be cut out enough. So I was wrong. eh.

low SATs
rank: 10/750
gpa: 4.7 - technically. I was an IB Diploma candidate so my classes were ridiculously weighted.
lots of ECs, etc etc

I got in last year with a 4.1 (yes rounded up) and a 1920. I took pretty much all AP/honors class, and had some extracurriculars. I used to think I didn’t deserve to get in until I saw that my SAT scores fall in the middle 50%.
