Why do you want to come to NYC?

Hi all, I am a student at Parsons in Manhattan and am doing a project about students interested in coming to NYC for college that are not originally from the area.

Just wondering why are you interested in coming to NYC and what are your expectations? What do you think it will be like to adjust to city life vs. a "regular" university? What influences/resources have you used to learn more about life at an urban university? Do you think shows like Sex and the City and Gossip Girl show a realistic portrayal of NYC?

Would appreciate any and all feedback! :) And if anyone has Q's about life in NYC as a student, I can definitely try to help you out!

My interest in applying to a school in NYC simply has to do with the fact of my love for the city. Where I live, in suburbia NJ basically, it's too calm for me. I yearn for a fast pace and vibrant setting.

I actually live 30-45 minutes from Manhattan, so I've been to the city several times in my life. I love transporting throughout the city, whether it is by foot or by subway. The subway is filled with some....interesting people. Once in a while you'll get a serenading bum to entertain and ask for change, or you might get a breakdancer to perform for the evening travellers.

If I got accepted to NYU and decided to attend, I think at first it might be a bit daunting being by myself, since other times I usually hung out with my parents in the city, but I would be able to adjust to it. Maybe the fact that I would be just a bus ride away from home would kind of make me feel a bit comfortable. And the fact that during the morning, I would just be a train ride away from my mom who works near Time Square :)

I think, unfortunately, shows like Sex and the City and Gossip Girl portrays a somewhat unrealistic NYC. I'll guarentee that there are some girls who come to school in NYC with the mentality that they will be able to spend a day between classes shopping on 5th avenue. I mean, it is not a bad thing, but that shouldn't be the only reason why one wants to go to a school that is in NYC. You should want to come here for resources and opportunities of jobs and internships. Not to mention the access to museums and theatres and basically anything that can supplement your educational experience.

the pizza!!!

lol j/k the pizza's amazing, but seriously, i've wanted to live in New York like ever since I visited when I was 9. Texas is too hot, too boring, and lots of people here are narrow-minded... plus where I live is just all boxy suburban houses. Oh, and if you don't have a car here, you're screwed!

The job opportunities and diversity in NY = awesome, too

All of my non-immediate family lives in and around New York City, and I've ALWAYS loved Manhattan - particularly the Village. I'm from just outside of San Francisco and spend three or so days/nights a week in the city... I definitely feel a strong connection to the fast paced vibe, and the idea that there's too much to do instead of nothing at all.

I attended the Columbia U. program over summer, during which you live in NYC for a month. Let's just say I fell in love with New York. The anonymity, the public transportation (SCHOOLS the Bay Area, I'll tell you that), the different foods, and knowing that you can either choose to go out and do fun things all night OR just curl up and watch a movie... whereas in most other places the former isn't even an option. Oh and ordering food at 2 am isn't so bad either.

How do you guys feel the community will be like at your college if you go to school in NYC? Are you looking for typical college activities like groups, sports, etc. or are you trying to get away from that?

get away, def.

I'm from the south, and often times, people don't understand why I love NY to the extent that I do. The only way I can explain it is to say it's as if my heart beats to the rhythm of New York City. I love the rush, I love the camaraderie, I love the subway, I love the grocery stores, I love it all.

^ barf....

For some reason, I like the subway...minus the smell of pee.

Not looking for typical college experience at all. As far from it as possible, please. I'd like to have fun with the people in my dorms and befriend my roommates/dormmates/whatever but otherwise what stokes me about NYU is the possibility of getting involved in different social circles all around the city, and not just being limited to those in my college. That's exactly why a college without a real definite campus appeals to me more than any other; the last thing I want from my college experience is another high school experience.

It was farther away from home than the other alternative...

But, more seriously, the food! Try getting okonomiyaki or borscht at midnight in the suburbs!

Sorry...I lived there for the summer and I'm obsessed.

Magnolia Bakery isn't in my hometown, either.
