Why do you want to go to college?

Weird question, I know, but I've seriously been thinking and questioning this for a while now.

So many people I know (myself included) know they want to go to college, but they don't know exactly why they want to go to college, other than it's expected of them to receive a higher education.

I want to go to college because of the opportunities it will grant me--yes, I want a good job, but it's not so much of the personal gain factor more than me wanting to help support my little brother if my mother, a single parent, passes away suddenly, and my future children, so they have the opportunity to do whatever their hearts desire. Oh, and I want to meet and talk with some amazing people with whom I'll keep in touch for the rest of my life.

So why do you want to go to college? Your thoughts? I'm curious. :)

To learn enough about human past to best influence human future.

It’s all about the jobs. College is an investment for future job security. If I just graduated from high school, my main opportunity would be for the clich

^ you know, I’m quite interested in the future too.

obviously you don’t need to go to college to learn about the past, but it might provide a conducive environment for doing so (if one is not self-motivated enough).

I do not think the past is very relevant to the future. Or at least the usefulness of learning about the past drops off rather fast the farther you go back. What’s useful is understanding humans and how they operate, and also understanding the most relevant past (where things are at now).

==

I want to go to college to get a degree because I’m not inventive/intelligent/motivated enough to have a high probability of doing what I want to do without one.

I want to learn a lot and take interesting courses (in some cases in subjects I wasn’t able to take during high school).

I expect to be prepared for a job (or multiple jobs) by the end, but I don’t need specific job training.

To expand my mind. High school education has done little for me and I’d like to learn much more than what I presently know. Of course, higher-paying jobs are the goal for every student that goes to college, but that is in no way guaranteed.

I want to study in other countries and learn more about the world around me.

I’d also like to have the knowledge to make the world a nicer place.

If this was actually true, we wouldn’t be in another recession after the Great Depression.

To save the whole medical industry.

Plan to be a biomedical engineer ^_^

To take over the world!

I want to be able to grow and be prepared to enter the adult world.

If more people did that, you mean. If the people deregulating the economy had paid attention to which regulations had been vital to stopping such a thing, then it wouldn’t have happened. But when the goal is to make money, fast and in large quantities, people tend to ignore the past.

To pursue my love and Passion for science, escpecially astrophysics. I know I want to be at the forefront of physics and be a part of that scientific community. Plus I can never stop learning. I think college will also be…fun. you meet a lot of amazing people and usually the person you end up marrying. The whole thing is a learning experience :)

jobs jobs jobs jobs jobs. Opportunities for those without a degree are quickly dwindling

Ok well this isn’t really an answer… I’m kinda asking the same thing. Because I was recommended into an AVID program, now I am enrolled in it, the program is supposed to ready you for collage. Why do I want to start getting ready now? (By the way, I’m in 7th grade) just wondering… I hope someone can help me!! Thanks!!

Why do I want to start writing this term paper now? (By the way, it’s due in 2 weeks) just wondering…

Mostly kidding… but it doesn’t hurt.

Don’t worry about college in 7th grade. That’s downright ridiculous. College is a means, not an end. Your life shouldn’t revolve around it. Go have fun, come back in three or four years.
