why do you want to go to harvard

other than "it's harvard"

i would prefer answers from some actual students that applied there this year or in the past years

I decided to not go to Harvard, but I’ll tell you some of the things I think are best about it.

Widener is gorgeous. Like, so gorgeous. So many books.
Crazy financial aid. (But this is the same as some peer schools).
Resources. This was the reason I told my interviewer. Say you want to write a paper on a book which Harvard doesn’t have. Admittedly, this problem is rare (since Widener is amazing) but Harvard will get you the book you need. Or DVD or whatever. Since I always get into really obscure stuff, mostly for obscurantist reasons, I think, I thought that was pretty legit.
And lastly, a more personal reason: Harvard has a good ballet program. Princeton does too, but it doesn’t have my major, so, looking at HYPM (never considered S) before applying, that made me happy.

A few reasons (in order):

1) The student life is awsome, especially the housing system. Its like Harry Potter.

2) The price… given my parents income, we would have to pay about 4000-6000 dollars. That’s better than anywhere else barring a full ride scholarship.

3) The academics. I want to go into medicine, and Harvard would be one of the best places to start.

Applicable list from previous thread:

Millancad - I believe that as a MIT student you can still audition for the Harvard Ballet Company. As you know, it really is a very good group, especially for an EC. A number of the dancers go on to professional gigs with very reputable companies.

I bet that most of the people go to Harvard just because it is Harvard, not because it is the best college for them, which is a pity in my opinion. Roughly said, if I go to Harvard one day, this choice of mine will be since I know what I will do in the future and Harvard is the place that, I believe, will develop the skills that I need in the best way possible as well as a place where I will feel well. Not just because its name is Harvard.

Yup, that is what pretty much all Harvard students say. And I suspect that for most of them it’s true, or at least as true for them as it will be for you.

I think the majority of those who are “prestige whores” don’t really get in because they don’t pursue what they love. Thyey just do what they think colleges want to see.

I chose Harvard because I felt it suited me best, really. Though I still have momentary spasms of doubt, I feel that Princeton - despite the attractiveness of Woody Woo - would’ve stultified my personal growth, and that several other attractive offers I had wouldn’t have left me happy. At Harvard, the food is terrible, but the people and resources are unparalleled, and that’s more than enough for me.

The faculty, the resources, the people. The extracurricular scene. Fabulous financial aid package. The chance to write for the Crimson or be on the staff of the oldest college literary magazine. Being with talented classmates. Research at Harvard Medical School. The upperclass residential houses. Being in Cambridge/Boston, arguably the best college town. Talking with a friend about a particular person who’s the leader in a certain field, getting all excited, then finding out the next day that that person is teaching at Harvard…

hahah i started this thread months ago, and i totally forgot about it…

@ksarmand
Why do you think Princeton would have stultified your personal growth? I am asking because that’s one of my top few choices.

heavy chinese accent numbah one!

^.^

I chose Harvard for the following reasons.

1) I love the campus even though I didnt have a tour there.

2) Harvard gives the opportunity of research.

3)Offers a lot of extracurricular activities.

4)The opportunity to study there in my dream field.

Great financial aid, great atmosphere, and obviously great academics make it hard to resist applying for me

^There are sooooo many schools that fit that description.

Some of which I will also be applying too ;)

I too raise this inquiry.

Congrats on getting in!

^I can’t tell if that’s sarcasm (because she hasn’t gotten in) or not, but I’d like to point out that she already applied to Dartmouth early decision, so…
