Why do you want to go to MIT?

Ooooh, such a pretty building....

Not that that matters, of course ;)
And not to imply that I have a shot at MIT...my life story thus far is kind of dull and semi-typical of an American, I have no international awards, not quite perfect scores, etc...but at least I know exactly what I want to do with my life, right?

/ramble

Why do I want to go to MIT?

So that I can join the club of 'card counters' as described in 'bringing down the house' OR maybe I can be that geek who moved to Japan and drives a Ducati and dates the gangster's daughter as described in 'Ugly Americans' - it is because i can have the choice to do whatever I want, because if i go to MIT - no1 is going to question me WTF am I doing it?

Why do I want to go to MIT?

Isn't it obvious? Ladies love geeks and engineers! right?

Yes.........

well i would much rather go to MIT than harvard, yale or princeton. The only other possibility i am considering is Brown. I really don't care about prestige/household name, etc., in fact the prestige (read conservative, stuck-up nature) is a major turn off of the other ivies. Plus, MIT simply has the most invigorating line up of classes I have ever seen...don't think I could ever take all the classes I would want to.

As far as workload, the atmosphere isn't competitive, its more collaborative, which should help. But workload is a definite fear about MIT

And for all you guys who think the social scene is nonexistent at MIT, remember, MIT is in BOSTON! and I've heard MIT parties are second only to BU...but I'll believe that when I see it.

I think for anyone who is math/science/engineering inclined but also wants to have a well-rounded education, MIT is the top choice

cause harvard sucks

Have you heard of the awesome pranks/hacking?

Over CPW someone decided to express their opinion: http://web.mit.edu/storborg/www/img/hahvahd.jpg

I like that one. :)

Wow, I would like to know the story behind that one

ummm... what? tea?

o_O

I'll definitely second Harvard sucking. And people who think "I have to go there because it's the only college for me [sob], and I've spent the last 18 yrs of my life so I could go there! [cry]" need to grow up. There's nothing that unique about Harvard. It's just the ultimate prestigue wh0re place.

Here's why I want to go to MIT (not necessarily in order of importance):

best math/science programs (I want to major in math or physics)

really good humanities (I want to double major or minor in history)

lots of really good electives to enrich myself with (I like a bunch of other stuff)

the people - People at MIT DO stuff. Instead of being like, "Whoa, that was a cool idea. Let's drink more," MIT students are more like, "Whoa, let's implement it, baby." I've heard so many awesome stories about the clubs people form and how readily available funds are. That's the BEST thing about MIT. If you have a great idea, there will always be the resources to carry it out and the willing people to contribute and inspire you further. I have so many ideas, but it's often hard to find other motivated people who think like me. I love my friends, but they're just not as passionate about new ideas as I am. I know that I will thrive at MIT. I hope to see you all there in September!

IT IS MY DESTINY...

No. I just want to go there because I can't explain it. Everything I have discovered this far about myself, I have found to be with MIT. IE: I love research, so does MIT. I love geeky pranks: so does MIT.

I am pretty sure even if I don't get in, I could learn the same material. But it would never be the same.

I'm up for the challenge. I may not be saying the same thing come 1 year from this date, but right now, I'm excited to take on MIT and take on the world.

MIT is mIT...if not know 4 years later....;)
thats my slogan.... MIT is an inspiring place....and there isnt anywhere else i have got even slightst of chances.....
:D

MIT is mIT?

I don't get it!

m-stands for me.... :D

i only have two concerns about MIT...first, will I have much time at all to pursue nonacademic activities (sports, going out, etc.) or to just relax
second: will it be harder to get into grad school if I have a lower GPA from MIT? Being such a difficult school grades will suffer.

either way, I am pumped about MIT!!
i just wanna have the rest of the college experience too. I absolutely love to learn but honestly, who doesnt want to have some time to just do whatever and have some fun.

I don't think the biggest problem for most people is handling the work load. More likely, the biggest problem is adjusting to the MIT "way of life"--where a lot of students work HARD and play hard. The first year or two would probably be when you have little to no social life (if that is ever the case at all). But from the MIT students I've talked to, you're having a great time learning and living at MIT by the end of sophomore year. And besides, look at the freshman retention rate...would it be near total if all first-year students studied 24/7 and were just barely getting by on the Pass/No Credit system?

part of the appeal is that it seems to be in actuality what my high school is only in theory and possibly actually in the past, a place full of proactive intelligent people.

another part is that there are cool courses like 6.001 (Scheme ROCKS!) and 6.821
