Every time I see pictures of campus, there seems to be no one there...no one lounging on the grass, no flurry of activity, no student group postings, no bustle like the otehr campuses you see. Like, I see pictures of the inside of that one crazy looking building with the blue murals, and I'm like, nice building, but where are the students?? Also, no pictures of the inside of the library like many colleges. Where are the people?

Lonely? We prefer calling that "calming solitude"...!

There are tons of students around, but there are times of the day when the pathways aren't swarming with people, unlike at other universities. ;) On sunny days, there are always people laying out in the grass or chilling on 180 or playing beer golf. There's plenty of bustle, but they probably took the PR pictures during classes, when there aren't a ton of people around. At Rice, we really appreciate the beauty of our campus, so we like to show you all the cool colors at Duncan Hall and all the pretty, serene, tree-lined pathways.

As to the inside of the library, I don't know why they don't show pictures... it's really gorgeous, well-lit, comfortable, and conducive to studying. And on the front of the library (and at the colleges) is where everyone posts things for student activities.

There are people around, they're just out-of-view of the camera. =)

So the college campus does feel very much alive?

To me it feels like there are always, always people around. So yes, the campus does feel alive. There are times, such as right in the middle of class, when things will quiet down. Also, the academic quad isn't quite as much of a hangout as the RMC or the colleges, so you're more likely to find people there than just hanging out with Willy. There is always some activity going on, whether a volunteering project, or a class meeting outside, or a luncheon, or a game of frisbee or volleyball, or a party going on during the evening. All this is to say, Rice campus is a very alive place -- just in selective areas and at selective times, mostly because it is small.

Here are two pictures I took while gathering video background stills for use in Rice IT productions... they're not completely representative of the entire Fondren Library, but they're better than nothing:

hrmm.. it might just be me.. but i don't think the pictures are working

Yeah, my bad. It's fixed now.

Had to reconfigure the webserver; normally don't allow images to be linked from other websites.

That's a little better. :)
