Why does Chicago have such weird essays?

Why do you think? Its a very refreshing change from other college applications. (However its also a bi**ch to organize and write, lol!)

(By the way, Im a transfer applicant applying for the early action march 1 deadline.)

I guess they really value students who can carry an interesting discussion, as well as having some sense of creativity.

It's actually the admitted students who come up with some of the essay topics. Chicago is one of the few schools to do that, which I think is pretty cool. It's not too difficult to write a Chicago essay in a couple of hours.

I agree. They weren't too bad to write because personally, I had a lot to say and the prompts allowed you to say what you want. It seemed like it was more "free form" in that sense. Different, but definitely refreshing.

It took me a while to get down to writing my essay, but when I did it all flowed out in about half an hour (after which, of course, came some editing). I love that their essays allow creativity and give you the chance to step out of the box. They were the only ones I truly enjoyed writing, and, I think, my best (I hope!).

One person's "weird" is another's "interesting," "fascinating," etc.

I enjoyed the fact that they didn't need to be the standard 5 paragraph essay. You could write in a cascading fashion or bust out some poetry whenever you felt the need. I was tempted to make my essay in my photoshop and make the paragraphs into shapes. But alas, I am far too lazy.
If one can't THINK enough to write on these prompts.. then I think he/she wouldn't enjoy chicago. I find it funny that people don't apply to a colege because of a few essays. We will be writing a lot more once we get in!

It also adds to the image that UChicago wants to create.

Dannon--I completely agree. One of my friend's didn't apply to any schools that required essays, even though she probably would've gotten into UMich, because she didn't want to write.

now, now let's not be elitist- there is after all the SLIGHT (read: sarcastic)possibility that you won't get in. :)

I think that a thoughtful essay is an essential part of the app. If you write a humdrum essay then it personifies you as a humdrum person. The creative attitude needed to have fun with them i believe will also be needed while at college.
And if you were referring to me in some horrible jab at my confidence- I already got in EA. I wasn't being cocky, but rather I was referring to actually getting into the coursework and actual LOCATION of the school.

Sorry friend, I have no interest in taking a "horrible jab at your confidence." I just can't stand elitism (intellectual or otherwise, deserved or otherwise)- it's really a fault of my own.

excuse my mistake, but this, with "think" capitalized, sounds like a snobby response to my light-hearted question:

But PEACE :)

All's well.. I was going towards the people who are too lazy to put thought into essays so they don't do them at all. Not that one needs to think to the point of being elite, but actually try to do them. I think it's crazy that kids don't apply to schools because there is an essay required. So it is 45 minutes of thinking.. maybe I should have put WORK in the place of THINK.

I agree with your point. It was just a misunderstanding. All's well that ends well.

I think it is not only refreshing, but important to take it as unique, and not try to fit the standard college essay styles to it. Mine made an argument, but had nothing to do with my interests/goals/suffering. The interviewer at Chicago liked it and actually complained about other applicants trying to combine the two and failing.
