Why does everyone laugh?

I stopped reading near the top of page 5. o.0

Personally, I love Philosophy. Which is why I’m not majoring in it. I am rarely self-motivated in anything else, but I am with Philosophy, and as such, spending money to major in it would be completely immature of me. I can study Philosophy on my own through books or my own thought. If I wish to discuss it, I can go online, or find a local group. Thing is, you don’t need to discuss Philosophy with anyone, you don’t have to read about Philosophy, if you don’t agree with that, then that’s exactly my point! Just do your own thing.

The fact is, if I want to live, if I want to give back to my parents, and explore the world, I need money. To do that, I need a well paying job, and as such, I’m going to major in something that I still find interesting, but can be financially rewarding.

Personally, you don’t need to major in anything. I plan on majoring in Computer Science, yet there are people out there that have self-taught themselves, and have done better off than those with a degree. This could be done the same to some degree with other majors, it’s until you get to a point where there is not enough resources, that you have to major in it.

Although… if you do a google search for Philosophy Careers, you can find a lot of possibilities. Guess I was wrong.

Before I talk..I’d just like to say I only read the first two pages. lol, I was too bored to read 4 more. BUT! The point is…If you guys are still trying to argue whether or not it is worth going to college for a Philosophy degree..here is my take on it..
el duque said you could go to the library and learn, and for discussion talk to a friend or on a forum. This is absolutly true…but…there is no sense of accomplishment with that. You see, if brand loves philosophy, then having a degree in it is very imporant to him. It’s kinda like if your best friend gave you a certain necklace on their deathbed..I mean, it’s just a necklace, right? To other people, it is worth street value. But to you, it’s very very important. You wouldn’t sell it for a million bucks. Why? Because they were YOUR friend.
Same thing with the philosophy degree. Personally, I wouldn’t want to spend 4 years in college for one, but that’s because I have little intrest in philosophy. To me, a degree with my name on it biology would mean the world, and that’s because biology is what I love. If brand wants a degree in something he loves, so that he can stare at it, and get that sense of accomplishment, then it’s no longer about “marketability” or “career possibilites” or even the “40,000 dollar investment”.
If you can’t understand this…then you are a shallow soul who goes only after things that you believe to have value to society…not to yourself.

^Nice post. Very true.

Thank you.

I didn’t read through all this, but I did catch the discussion on philosophy majors not being able to compete with BBAs.

George Soros was a philosophy undergrad and nearly earned a PhD in Philosophy. Enough said.

Having spend few years reading philosophy, I’ve found that philosophy basically consists of pointless wordplay. No offense to those who hold philosophy as their only LOVER that they must major in it to vent their unrequited love.

Speaking of major in philosophy… what you gona do after you get the degree? Get away from philosophy! That’s what you gona do, otherwise, you will end up becoming a nameless, moneyless professor teaching in a college.

and let’s analyze those pretentious philosopher’s path, for instance, let’s say, derrida. Derrida wrote tons of books which i hardly understand, however, he is famous because media loves him. It is not because of his philosophy that attract millions, but rather, it is the media.

Beside the empirical, the pragmatical, the ontological imperatives(you are suppose to laugh) of NOT studying philosophy in an institutional setting, there are also philosophical reasons why you shouldn’t study philosophy in an INSTITUTIONAL setting.

Well, let’s see. Western philosophers of the last century are all frustrated with philosophy at the end. Starting with Nietzsche, no matter it is Hedigger on being or that Wittgenstein dude on language, all those philosophers have agreed that, basically, philosophy is dead. (Nietzsche “Philosophies are memoir of philosophers” Hedigger’s destruktion, the death of philosophy thing, etc)
What, then, is the point of major in something that you know that is pointless? You may disagree by recite the holiness, the nobleness, “the western tradition”, the all chauvinistic slogan assigned to those who think they are studying something high, something noble, something pretentious.
Seriously, you get nothing out of those modern philosophers, they offer no theories, no explanations, but rather critique of a particular topic, the critique of this, of that, of this, of that.. and of critique itself(when you reach wittengstein) and of even the existence of critique(when you reach Deleuze) and finally the a;lskdfjalsdjf of critique of critique of * infinite( deconstruction)

I really want to ask you courageous philosophers, what’s the point of major in philosophy beside all those fancy intellectual halos surrounding it?
Enlighten me O_O

Remember, as Buddha said. Life is transient, don’t waste your money on pointless thing. Aye~~~~

Get the highest scores on the LSAT (along with Classics majors) and go to great law schools, perhaps?
