My mom has researched so much about all of the schools that I am applying to. My mom's favorite school and the school that she wants me to go to is the University of Scranton. Based on what my mom reads on the Internet and on other sources, it seems like everyone who goes there really loves it. I liked the campus when I visited it but I was just wondering what everyone loves about it so much. My mom says everyone says that the people there are so great and everyone is really nice but I don't know if I will love it as much as everyone seems to. The school is division 3 and doesn't have any Greek life. Does anyone know what's so great about Scranton and why everyone loves it?

Hey Italic, I’m currently a freshman at the U so I think I could be of some assistance. Everyone here has their own reasons to love this place, but the most common one is the friendly faculty. I found that people here really do care about you and they want to help you however they can. For example I was a little uncomfortable with my living space and I was thinking about moving into this special program called cura personalis. I told my academic adviser this and he got right on it. the next day I get a call from residential life and they were happy to help me out. Another reason is that the biology/pre med program here is very strong. I don’t know what your major your plans will be but if your a bio major you should def consider coming here. Just be careful about the bio practicals!!! Now things that I don’t like. Well for one thing is the price. Its 45, 000 a year and to me thats a lot for a school that isn’t even that well known out side of the northeast. We are number 8 but we’re number 8 in the north. Another thing is that and this might be for most colleges is that it is hard to find your group of friends. It takes time and work but I get the feeling that most of these guys don’t even want to socialize but that may be because its only our first semester and we are still adjusting. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions

Son is current frosh and we researched many schools and visited about 25 schools. While he got into more prestigious schools and SUNY Binghamton SOM, he kept coming back to Scranton. He was down to Loyola, Scranton, Stonehill and Bing. Has been very happy with his choice and merit scholarship did play a part as well. The main pull was the community of students and faculty. The location is not the draw but seek and you will find things to do and love. That said he and his roommate both went to (different) all-boy catholic HS. About 50% or so of students from parochial schools.
Has not complained, playing club sport, doing well academically and socially. His roommate is pre-med and busting he but in classroom. As mention by other poster, has strong pre-med but be prepared to work hard if you are not a very gifted student. That is same in most pre-med programs.
As a parent, I am happy with his choice. Again, felt that staff and faculty has students best interests in mind and will go out of their way to do what it takes for them to be successful and find there way. Family/community spirit is high.
Best of luck in decision.

It’s funny, I hear the same thing. Everyone seems to love this school - especially those that went there.

My daughter has visited twice and while she likes it, it’s not her top choice. In talking to others/doing research scranton seems to have less “negative” said about it than the other schools she’s looking at.

For example, she’s looking at Providence College and Loyola and you can find some pretty extreme opinions of both. Scranton seems to not fall into that category.

tellch00- I too had read, probably the same post/sites, and came to the same conclusion. During research phase, did not think Scranton had much to offer in certain aspects. Not in a “happening city”, D3 sports, lacking in athletics facilites (fields). Northern PA weather is not great. On the plus the U. did invest 200+million into facilites, new science, dorms x2, student center and fitness center. Library is pretty nice but could be bigger. Faculty and student community was one of the main draws, academic and social aspect was next. Son join club sport 1st week on campus and roommate is athlete as well. Both have had no lack of social life or making friends since involved with teams. If not doing that students can get into a non-sport club or 2, early and would be help to get yourself out there. The dorm room is for sleeping and some studying. Friend of son is looking to transfer out of his college and is visiting for 3 days. My guess is his friend will be there by fall. All that said, Loyola was son’s first choice but the merit offer by Scranton over Loyola was big difference.
Last point is son is a snowboarder and he has a place to do that too in Feb. So for him, best of a few things.

Thanks everyone!

sportsman, if you’re son is into snowboarding he’s in the right place We’re looking at some of the same schools you did, and there was a look or style of many of the students at some of the schools (one in particular) that we did not particularly care for. Of course it’s not fair to use such a broad brush but we couldn’t help but notice.

We did not see this “look” at Scranton.
