Well, being a doctor is for those who can actually handle the pressure of the job. And I agree with woishe. lol you hate docs now, when you need treatment you’ll love them (in other words, when you need someone, you’re opinion of them suddenly changes… interesting how that works, don’t ya think?)

I’m sure you’d alter your perception of doctors if you got yourself a pair of inflamed testis.

While doctors may not help people to the degree of some other groups, they do (as a whole, not necessarily individually) help people. Of course, it is their job, but I’ve found plenty of altruistic doctors.

I couldn’t imagine myself being a doctor, since it’s not what I’m interested in (I’m more of a physics/chemistry person, and I don’t like hospitals or doctors’ offices). I probably would hate having medicine be my profession. That said, I don’t hate doctors. I can see why someone would want to be a doctor, and wanting to help others for a living is not bull****. What is fulfilling for me or you might not be fulfilling for someone else.

Being a doctor is an amazing job. A surgeon in a major city will earn 500k on the low end and 2 million on the high end if they’re really a star. 800k is pretty typical in places like Baltimore and Philly. Over 1m is typical in NYC. And on top of this money, you are generally well respected for your profession and considered to be doing a social good.

Let’s compare this to other “top” professions.

Lawyers - A typical lawyer in a major city makes under 100k. If you go to a top law school, get into a prestigious firm, and work your way up for 7 years, you will have the CHANCE to become a partner and make 500k to 1m in most cases. There are some places in Manhattan that will pay like 2m on average but I’m talking normal firms in major cities. So as a lawyer, even if you go to an awesome law school there’s still only a slim chance that you’ll ever make the surgeon salary. You could also try striking out on your own but the most important legal work goes to the “biglaw” type firms. And on top of this salary that’s probably less than being a doctor, NOBODY RESPECTS YOU. lawyers are often thought of as doing a social harm and benefiting from the work of others.

Investment Bankers - So you come out of Princeton and you wanna be a banker. It’s where the money is, right? And you’re really smart, right? Yeah and yeah, you tell yourself. But you only make 90k your first year. And when you leave in 2 years because IB analyst programs are typically 2 years, you want to go to the buy side. Blackstone Group, Citadel, you name it. But you don’t get the exact one you want and you end up at a big pension fund. Eventually you make 450k a year. By manhattan standards, you can barely afford to send your 2 kids to the right private schools. The Baltimore surgeon has a way cheaper standard of living and also makes twice as much as you, so his life is significantly better. On top of this, your job is miserable. Everyday is painful. And the whole world blames you for their problems and calls you a wall street fat cat, even though within Manhattan everything is expensive and your salary isn’t that high.

Doctor is an amazing job. Plus even though everyone wants to be a doctor now, only 20% will get into a med school. and then they change their minds.

Woodrow, I’m thinking you just confirmed the OP’s point, that doctoring is a profession people choose for the money and the prestige, rather than a special calling for it. I’m not denying that these people want to help others, though; doesn’t everybody?

-It’s science-based, but more rewarding than sitting in a laboratory all day being a research scientist.
-Research scientists go to school for WAY longer, and they make less money. They spend the first decade of their career filling test tubes and stirring solutions.
-It pays a lot. I’m hearing lots of different things on this thread, from 100k to 2m a year, but even 100k is a good salary. The idiot who double-majors in Women’s Studies and Philosophy is probably going to make 25k a year.
-OP: if it wasn’t for doctors, the world would be full of people with inflamed testicles.
-Also, OP: yes, being an astronaut is very rewarding. Thank you for standing on the moon; that really benefits the world.
-And one more, OP: by the look of your grammar and spelling skills, you won’t be getting into graduate school and becoming an astronaut.

@Woodrow. The investment banker thing is right, but you have to take into consideration that the top 1% of IB’s will make 10 times the amount the top 1% of doctors will.

But, most of us won’t be in the top 1%, so be a doctor!

^100K isn’t good anymore. If you have 2 kids, and you live in a nice area, you’ll have enough to pay the bills, but not much for anything else.

Good for you, I don’t plan on being a part of that. Capping Physicians’ salaries at 100k/year? After 4 years of college, 4 years of med school, plus ~4 more years doing residency and stuff, and I would be capped at 100k? lol no thanks.
