I'm dissapointed..I basically got the answer I assumed I would: that human beings are simply pleasure seekers. "It feels good" "It's fun" It seems most people just live for the moment, they want instant gratification, and they can do that through alchohol. Thanks everyone for posting your reasons.

Glad we could help you realize people like to have fun and feel good while they live. Instant gratification? Nah, I plan out my week based on how much I want to drink. Actually I attribute my above average grades to the fact that I do my work early so I can free up time to drink (seriously). So it's more like a detailed plan based on gratification that will eventually be achieved.

I don't know why people are so adamant about drinking in college. Now that I'm especially close to actually being legal, I'm less inclined to want to drink, which I find weird. Mostly because heavy alcohol binges affect your judgement for almost a month afterward (my life is hectic enough sober); the other reason being that I've found it's a lot more fun to mess with (non-violent!!!) drunk people when you're not. It gets pretty dumb when everyone's plastered.

Repeat after me: "I will use the search function or at the very least look through recent threads so I will notice if there is a 5 million page thread on this exact topic that was recently posted"

And jaso9n2, don't make this some racial battle. I'm white as well. How would you feel (assuming you're black, you may not be) if I said "And there is a portion of soceity that rob people for the sake of robbing. Black guys."

First, I'm not Black. Second, if I'm going by what I've witnessed with my own two eyes and what I've read, it's usually white guys who drink for sake of being drunk. I can't say I've ever heard any Black, Hispanic, or Asian guys sitting around talking about how wasted they got, and how they can't wait to do it again. Nor can I recall a time when girls of any race were sitting around talking about the same thing.

That's not realistic. I've heard plenty of Hispanic and Black guys and girls talk about getting drunk, and drinking for the sake of getting drunk.

Do any of you attend elite universities? Some people want to get drunk to get their minds off the fact that they have work schedules that are just kicking their asses. Maybe some people think school's not difficult for a million possible reasons (don't attend schools perceived as difficult, are super-smart individuals, spend all their time studying, etc.), but you need a phucking relief every once in a while from classwork, and imbibing alcohol is a pretty effective way to do it. Jeez.

If you expected a different answer, you are unable to grasp the reality of human nature. Why do kids bust their asses in high school to go elite colleges? What do kids expect with getting a degree from a top school? A job that gets you $30,000 a year? People want achievement and to live pleasurable lives, and people want pleasurable lives intrinsically - a great job, nice house, trophy wife; obedient, lovely and intelligent children, fame, status, etc. Human beings are pleasure seekers Einstein, and you should be bothered by your inability to recognize an outrageously obvious societal observation.

Just a quick fact: if you don't drink in college, you're in the minority. Think about it.

Guinness tastes amazing (not anything like urine, they must have had Natural Light or something! AMATEURS.)
[/quote]

Natty Light is acceptable for beirut, but that's it (well, it's good after having hard liquor). I'm a Bud Light man myself. Although I do love English ale once in a while.

Keystone and Natty Light are very urinish. Guinness, yes it's good...it's what my brother drinks and I only have it when I'm around him. It's not really a party beer from what I've seen, and that sucks. My brother was in the Navy in New England for four years and I stayed with him a lot last summer and let me tell you, good beer is made at the small "nobody's heard of them" breweries in the New England area. Bud Light and Budweiser and pretty good, not quite Guinness but not quite Keystone either. Keystone's popular for one reason and one reason only--it's cheap!

I'd rather drink other stuff than beer though....I had a thing for Smirnoff Twisted's for a while, I love love love love love Sparks and Tilt, and like my share of mixed drinks as well...Screwdrivers, rum and coke, just about anything goes well with Sprite, among other things.

I sound like an alcoholic...but I honestly don't even drink that much. Just that when I do, it's the stuff I just mentioned.

That's completely idiotic. I've been around plenty of Black, Hispanic and Asian guys, as well as girls of all races, drinking for the sake of getting drunk. Did you consider the fact that white people are, in fact, the majority in this country in your assumption that "mostly white guys" drink to get drunk?

soccerguy, everyone drinks, and not all of us are "lemmings"...most of us can have a good time with or without alchohol, but lets face it, its alot more fun with....and no, i dont just drink to be "cool", i do it because i enjoy it....and yes i do think ur sheltered, its fine if u dont drink, but dont be a ***** about it and insult those who do....doing that ull never get laid, just some advice

Okay, first off? Both of you are lying. Making general comments in response to my general comment doesn't make yours any more valid.

I didn't say no Black, Hispanic, or Asian people drink...so get that out of your head. I just said that, when it comes to White guys, out of the people who drink to get drunk, they tend to drink to get drunk...the most.

And Dorian, don't play statistics with me. This isn't going into some journal for research purposes. I live in Atlanta where there are plenty of whites, blacks, hispanics, etc. There have been many times when I've been sitting in communal space around campus and heard various "groups" of people talking. And I'm telling you, whenever the subject of drinking comes up, and waxing poetic about how drunk one got, it's usually white guys.

Drinking is worse among minorities from what I've seen - not people who go to school (tends to be an 'ol white boy thing), but among those who don't (minorities are more likely to dropout), the drinking is pretty rampant. I just don't think CCers would typically be exposed to those sort of environments

I don't believe I made any generalized statements at all, and, while my evidence may have been anecdotal, making statements like "There's a sizeable portion of society that drinks to get drunk. White guys." comes off as racist no matter how you slice it.

Oh please. You know it doesn't come off racist. If you take it that way, that's not my fault. It's definitely racial; I'll give you that. But my saying that white guys drink to get drunk and white people suck are two different things.

Actually I agree with jaso9n2. This is a college life forum so I would assume that we are discussing in a college environment and in the college environment I also think that white folks (especially males) drink a lot more. I read a stat that backed up this assertion somewhere, but his comments are not racist in the least.

Okay, I'd honestly rather not make this an extensive discussion, but think about it this way: you don't have to say "white people suck" for it to be racist. If I walked around implying that all black people are good at sports or all Asian people are good at math, I would likely get called out for being racist, and neither of those are negative stereotypes. Whether or not your statement reflects what you witness where you live, it's not a good idea to make generalizations about groups of people. That's really all I want you to understand.

Dude, no one would call you a racist if you said those things. You're only a racist if you're making generalizations and putting a negative slant on them. If you said, "Asians do well in school because they're geeks with no social life" I could see the almost-racist slant in that. But it's about intention.

There's a poster in the parent forums who has lots of stats on college drinking, and one of them is that, statistically, the group likeliest to binge drink is white males. I think it expands to be something like white males from higher socio-economic backgrounds at elite rural schools...something to that effect. Maybe it has something to do with entitlement, I don't know. College students are a pretty small section of the population, though, so it's not really like you can say that because it's true of college students, it's true of the entire country or world as a whole.

And I don't get why every time someone asks the people who drink why they do it, people flip out and say that it's an idiotic question. I don't drink, I don't personally see anything enticing about it, why is it horrible to ask people who do drink why they do it, what they like about it, etc. I mean...I don't play sports and it never seemed like a "fun" thing to do for me, but lots of other people play sports and enjoy doing it...why is it so dumb to be curious about why they enjoy it and what they get out of it? Or perhaps, you just needed a new reason to harass people who don't drink, all the old reasons having gotten old....god forbid someone have different leisure pursuits than you.
