Why does FAFSA does this?

Immediately after completing the FAFSA, I see a note that details my EFC.

However, about four months after completing the FAFSA, I get an email from the Department of Education telling me that my FAFSA has been revised and giving me a new EFC. This has occurred for two years now, and it's strange because I never revised my FAFSA.

Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

did you send verification of your tax data & forms to your school?
They can correct your info for you- but you should be able to find what has been changed so you can confirm that it is correct

Vtoodler, this doesn't appear to be unusual. EC is right you should try to see if you can figure out what changes. On the other hand, I typically get a few of these emails every year. The first few times it happened, I went back to try to see what changed, but, couldn't find anything immediately obviously different. Several of my friends said the same thing happened with theirs...so...I quit worrying about it...

You are supposed to update your FAFSA yearly or for as long as you wish to qualify for federal loan guarantees.

The computers at the DOE and IRS talk to each other. FAFSA ask questions about your income stated in the 1040. If you didn't update the FAFSA and the 1040 information do not match-DOE/FAFSA will make it match.

The DOE informed us of a $2.00 error, which the IRS informed us about a month later. (Have you ever tried to track down a $2dollar error when you do the taxes on computer? You start thinking that maybe an electron didn't get where it was supposed to be. - It was a missed interest from a checking acct.which had an interest yield of <2%) We only filed FAFSA to obtain the direct federal guaranteed loans and because the school said to, or else.

I'll share something weird and similar that happened me. Last year, we did our FAFSA and Profile in January like we always do. Sent it to two Us for our two continuing students. Finished taxes early and sent copies of filed tax returns. In May the FA awards for this year finally came out, late as usual. I hate this wait, but lo and behold, the awards are generous and consistent with past years, so kids get to go to school another year - yay!

Anyway, the weird thing is we get an email in lat July saying our FAFSA had been corrected. Does not say by who, why, or how much. I pull the new SAR and data. About three items were "corrected" by a few dollars, but they now do not match the tax returns, so now they are actually incorrect. Like our income tax for the year was corrected from ###4 to ###1. But the tax return and the amount we paid was ###4, as originally on the FAFSA.

I don't understand what is happening. It is trivial, but I don't like strange things happening to something that is so important.
