Why does nearly every CCer want a NERDY school?

I see it in like every thread. Do you guys WANT to be nerds?

Yes. Nerds are the folks who make the world go round...
Nerds forever!

I think the term nerd has replaced intellectual in some cases. There are many socially astute, yet intellectually motivated kids around, who 20 or 30 years ago would not be described as nerds. Today, perhaps because of the movie, Bill Gates, and Steve Jobs, many people call themselves nerds, or are referred to as such. It seems all things intellectual have become associated with the word nerd. To the extent that is true, "nerd schools" are highly desired by many.

I plan on attending Iowa State or Oklahoma State...yeah, state schools. No HYPS for me. State school...save money, awesome athletics (gotta hand it to Stanford and Duke and UNC though). I've grown up on agriculture and love schools that offer it (although its not my major. anyways...yeah, i just love these two schools. so, OP, dont worry, we're not all lookin for a "nerdy" school

Thought about UIUC? They have a great Ag program, and everything else.

Haha, come on, dude. This is a website entirely dedicated to the college selection process. Of COURSE it's filled with nerds! :) I'm way in the minority in wanting a Greek scene and an active social life. I'm also, sadly, way in the minority in choosing a school based mainly on fit as opposed to prestige/strength in i-banking and biz/etc.

I originally came here to make fun of people who were the nerds that had perfect scores and stuff, I didn't apply to any Ivy League schools or anything because I'm an athlete-student, not a student-athlete :)

Now because of Hurricane Katrina I'm at Brown and I'm a complete hypocrite. I even plan on doing some the work this semester to possibly transfer for good. . .I don't even know the last time I did homework was. This site changed me :(

Penn, Duke, Dartmouth, Brown, UNC, etc students would beg to differ. Not all top schools are Nerdy.

^^ yeah... lots are jocks

Yeah, I don't understand why they hate hot women. Go to a public school like Illinois people.

Why? Because of the dollar bills.........MIT, Caltech, U chicago.....

Are my schools nerdy? I like Vanderbilt and Davidson. Not that I can afford them...I'll prolly go to UVA or William and Mary. But I am a nerd...I checked out my first college book at like 13 (oh yes!)

What is a "nerdy school"? And is BU a nerdy school?

Yea b4 i came here i wondered who those 4% of kids were that scored equal or higher than me on ACT now i definitely think ive found them all, I actually have no interest in any Ivy school they r a waste of money and effort for undergrads im going to either Ohio Univ. or Purdue Univ. b/c i love them not because they are "prestigious"

I want to go to Davidson cuz its pretty, below the mason dixon line (not that i have anything against the north...), academic, and...the description of the stereotypical student describes me perfectly. Its just lovvvely

I'm assuming this isn't trolling.

The number one reason I want to go to an Ivy league school is so that the vast majority of students at my school do not have this attitude. After spending the summer at Harvard SSP, I'm certain I'd enjoy being at a school such as that much more than a state party school. In fact, I am having some reservations about applying ED to Penn. Despite loving it when I visited, the notoriously large Greek scene is making me think twice.

What you call a "nerd school" is what others think of as an intellectual school with a community of students who actually care about academics and are passionate about what they're studying. And yes, people actually have fun at these places too, as hard as it may be to believe. If I wanted my college experience to consist only of doing as little work as possible, getting drunk, going to football games, and random hookups, I'd go to my state school (PSU).

I hate all those kids who try to act all elitist like they r intellectually above the partiers just b/c they want to act like they dont fit in b/c they dont want to fit in.. if u dont make friends well just say it

I think everyone wants to be around people like themselves. For some, that means going to a school where frat parties and beer are the emphasis. A lot of people fit in best in these types of places (terrybhs06, perhaps you're one of them?)

However, has it ever occured to you that people may go to "nerd schools" BECAUSE they like the more intellectual atmosphere and because they like the attitude of the students who go there? And perhaps, because they share these values with the majority of the other students, they even "fit in" better and make more friends at a "nerd school."

No nerdy schools for me. Nothing wrong with a good ol' state school with some of that Ohio spirit!

Haha, nope, I've been here a while and my posts are usually meaningful. I guess that last post wasn't, but it was the truth. I consider myself an athlete-student rather than a student-athlete and I wanted to go to a school where that was the norm and I could still have some great academics. Tulane fit that bill.
