I was just wondering why NYU Stern and honestly, the university itself accepts students with a 3.7 or 3.6 UW GPA. 2 of my friends, different states, had 3.9’s and a >1500, and were rejected, not even deferred from ED
B/c UW GPA & test scores are not the only metrics used.
The admissions process is a complex thing that can change each year depending on what the school needs are. It is very difficult to read the tea leaves.
No they had very good EC’s
My friend last year was accepted with a 3.6 UW and 3.8 weighted for ED. He had a 2110 I believe, but lackluster extracurricular activities and no hooks (white male, parents college educated, etc.) It happens. He knew he was on the cusp as well.
NYU is divided into divisions (relating to majors offered), and some divisions may be more selective than others.
This still doesn’t make sense, somethings not right.
I was accepted to Stern with a 3.1 UW and don’t feel that I am a ‘modest’ student. In reality GPA is hard for a college to use to compare a wide range of students as every school is different. I agree my GPA is low for a the school but I SAT scores and EC’s matter more to the college. Also I took the hardest program in my school (IB) and you have to take into account the course load of each student.
@FedMaster The “something that is not right” is the fact that it is a subjective process and one that is much more complicated than gpa’s and test scores. A student may have lots of EC’s but they might be all over the place without a real passion and they might not show leadership. Or someone’s EC’s can be great but they might not have written a good essay or they may have somewhat weak recommendations. Or they may accept someone who has a more creative background into Stern to round out the class instead of someone who has more typical EC’s.
Is getting accepted by an Accounting major hard for undergrad?
