well...that's a rhetorical question...we all know it's about the anxiety

but the vast majority of the time, you can pretty much guess safety/match/reach just by looking at stats

for example, i might have gotten a 2050 SAT...i know that, say, trinity college (CT) is a match, or that CSUN is a safety...not exactly the way you should do it, but you get my point

i'm sure there's more to college admissions that just stats, but in terms just figuring where you'll most likely be accepted (or not), this forum is superfluous

I don’t want to ruffle anyone’s feathers here, but I think there’s two parts to it.

The first being that seeing one person be chanced puts the idea into someone else’s head. They may have a 4.3 and a 2200 SAT but the advice given to someone else of equal stats is worthless, they need reassurance or advice given to THEM personally. Even though the information is freely available online, we need to make the process more humane, to have someone tell us “good shot” so we don’t falter. Everyone here may be a top gun at their school, but when they see everyone else on here, who are all applying to the same 12 schools, they begin to worry. “They’re in, but what about ME personally?” they might as well ask.

Secondly, we have those who needlessly have to flaunt their stats, again for reassurance, but mostly to show off. “I have a 2250 SAT, is this good enough for (enter Ivy League school or the like)?” or “I’ve never got a B in my life before and I have scored 4’s and 5’s on my APs should I worry?”. Yes I sound a bit jealous, in comparison to these kids I’m pretty average, mediocre even. However, I’m not blinded by my jealousy. I can understand worrying for one, but I can’t tolerate a giant forum where the “smartest” (some people here may be fudging their data, ie the thread “2400 SAT…Chance Me!”) disdainfully glance down on one another and try to one up each other. It gets a bit boring and annoying after a while. Why I post a lot of the time, well, I don’t know.

People whose admissions chances are difficult to calculate benefit from this forum. Suppose you had poor test scores but a great GPA. Suppose you had a learning disability. Suppose you had great stats that would prove uninteresting to Ivy League admissions officers. This forum is for people who are tied in knots over such dilemmas.

I’m not sure about the value of posting in this thread, but I certainly see a value of reading this thread. The “Chance Me” stuff is just a method of getting people to post all their stats.
Then people can look at the stats (including all the details about ECs and awards) of the pool of applicants they might want to compete with for a particular university and get an idea from that if they have a chance.

Not scientific, but thats the value I see in it.

As far as bragging, I’m sure a lot of that goes on, but not as much as there might be. Because out of the thousands of kids who post stats on here, relatively few of them every come back to brag about where they got in.

^^^ I forgot to add that it’s possible that why so few report acceptances is that because even from among kids with perfect or near perfect stats, acceptances to some universities are pretty rare.
