Why does UF have such a low percentage of OOS students?

I am out of state and was recently looking at UF and I saw that the OOS percentage was 9%. Why is it so low? Does the state of Florida have a cap on how many OOS students can be admitted? Or do they just not get as many OOS applicants? Because, UF seems to be great. Good academics, good athletics, and great weather. So, I just thought it was odd that less OOS people were enrolling. Do you guys have any idea why? Just curious. Thanks! :)

actually, the out of state percentage is only 3%. i had no idea that it was that low! i cannot believe it is not higher- lots of people love florida!

Really? Wow! Because I was maybe considering UF because they have a pretty good journalism program.

It could be because the out-of-state tuition is 6 times the in-state tuition. We’re in a small town in TN, and out of 230 students graduating from our local high school, 3 applied and were accepted to UF. But because of the out-of-state tuition, my daughter is the only one from her high school attending UF.

She was offered a pretty generous scholarship, though, which is why she’ll be a Gator this fall.

Non-Florida resident enrollment is capped at 10% by Florida Board of Governors regulations. The Board of Governors oversees Florida’s 11 public universities, including the Univ. of Florida.

@lorgartay that may be one of the reasons. And congrats on your daughter! I hope she enjoys her time at UF!

@lizard I thought there was a cap. But is it as difficult to get into UF out of state as it is at maybe unc chapel hill or UVA?

I think its those “jorts” that you Gators tend to wear.

lorga well thank goodness we won over the Vols. Welcome to UF and when you come down to drop off your daughter. Make sure to pick up a Gator Cap and bumper sticker.

On second thought maybe just the cap.

I think it’s because no one from outside of Florida wants to go to UF. Unless you live in like Wyoming and have no halfway decent public university.
At least I don’t see why anyone would, but that’s probably just because I’m a Florida resident who really wanted to go OoS.

We’re originally from FL, moved to TN 10 years ago. Daughter was a Gator from birth. She was accepted to UT, LSU, Auburn, Miss State, & NC State, but once she was accepted to UF and offered a scholarship, there was no other option for her. She HATES the song Rocky Top so UT was actually her last choice school.

Irrespective of a 10% statutory limit on OOS students, UF caps OOS enrollment at no greater than 3%. In fact the actual enrollment for undergraduate students is slightly less than 3%. The admission requirements for OOS are even more difficult with a number of students competitive for HYPS and other top 20 school getting rejected. It is not clear but some have suggested projected major may factor into OOS admission decisions.
