Guys...my very own MOTHER told her boss I'm applying to Penn State.

Okok I admit, we are Germans and noone here has heard of Ivies except for Harvard and Princeton. But anyway!

If it's not HYPS, commoners usually won't know it.
But they're commoners...they don't matter ;)

Yeah, most of my friends are still confused why I chose Penn over Northwestern.

Agreed, it gets a little irritating because I'm sure we all have the little "elisit-mini-self" inside, but the people who matter (future employers) will know exactly how lovely Penn is even if we'd appreciate some acknowledgment from peers or even teachers.

I don't bother to attach the 'Ivy League' tag much now and so people just think I'm going to the generic University of State school for PA. Oh well, it can't really be helped.

Ivy League is on the east coast. You won't hear much about the other Ivies outside of the east coast either because there are west coast dominant schools like UCB and CalTech. You also have schools like Rice and Vanderbilt for the midwest and south. And remember, the masses don't care about getting a good school, just getting into college, so they naturally won't care for the Ivy League anyway.

Yeah... I feel kind of lame when I have to tell people that Penn is an Ivy. So I've stopped doing it :D It just seems wrong to have to TELL people that a school is in the Ivy League, you know? If they think I'm going to Penn State... Oh well.

Who cares what the people in your highschool or town think? These may be people who dont venture far from where they live and think that University of Mississippi is impressive, or Auburn, or your state university which could be ranked 60 or lower. 3/4 of those who come from these southern or midwestern towns go to colleges that those in the northeast have never heard of. Do you think anyone in the northeast is very familiar with Rhodes or Flagship? You can be sure that every employer on Wall Street, every medical school, law school and business school admission office at every top school across the country has heard of University of Pennsylvania and will be impressed especially if you do well. When you get to the University of Pennsylvania, the majority of your classmates (except those who were not really compelling but had significant connections or possibly recruited athletes with lower scores) will be amonst the top students in the country.

Besides, Penn is like a private club. We don't want laymen using our name casually.

yup, all that matters is what the future employers think..

Private club~ Sounds interesting....

I like that idea
