Why doesn't CC list USC as a "Top University"?

Exactly, siliconvalleymom.

"I don't really see why Tufts is relevant at all. The important point is that there is more interest and activity on the USC board than on 13 of the schools currently listed as CC "Top Universities." Shouldn't one of those schools get dropped down to "alphabetical' status?"

Activity on CC doesnt make a top academic school. Maybe CC should have a list for most active.

Yeah, they should just change the category to "CC Most Popular Universities."

ahahahaha. This thread is too funny. Maybe there should be a list of "Schools with the Biggest Inferiority Complex". Tufts would be #1 on that list! ;)

I like the USC vs. Tufts debate. It keeps this thread at the top!

I keep seeing the claim that USC and Tufts are tied in the USN&WR Ranking. Although a matter of one ranking place doesn't truly make one school better than another, it is accurate to note that in the 2008 ugrad rankings, USC ranks 27, and Tufts is 28. Last year both schools were tied at 27. Again that one place doen't matter significantly, but it is true that they are not tied at 26.

You are correct, proudtrojan. I was looking at old 2007 stats. Here are the latest stats for 2008-
<a href="http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/t1natudoc_brief.php%5B/url%5D">http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/t1natudoc_brief.php</a></p>

This is an interesting chart to see the progress USC has made but it does not include 2008-
<a href="http://chronicle.com/stats/usnews/index.php?category=Universities&orgs=&sort=2007%5B/url%5D">http://chronicle.com/stats/usnews/index.php?category=Universities&orgs=&sort=2007</a></p>

Thanks for the link to that chart, CC411. It is interesting to look at the huge drop on the charts for UC Berkeley, MIT and UNC...I'm wondering what changes in the USNWR calculations resulted in those dramatic differences over the past 20 years. The chart does clearly show the rise of USC over the past decade.

One thing to note about USC is that it has one of the highest number of National Merit Scholars. I don't have the link at hand but there have been numerous postings over the years on how the schools rank and USC is almost alway top 10-15.

Why do so many (or so it seems on CC) compare USC to Tufts? Are the two really that similar/comparable in stats, etc.? Like East-Coast and West-Coast equivalents?

It is probably because the schools are ranked close to each other in the US News rankings. However, the schools are quite different. USC is much bigger and has a Division 1 sports program, Tufts is smaller and has a Division 3 sports program.

To me, you really want to look at particular programs. USC has a higher rated engineering school and its cinema program and school of music do not even exist at Tufts. The comparison seems more like Apples and Oranges. USC is probably more like Boston College or Boston University than Tufts.

Agreed. Tufts really emphasizes a liberal arts college approach to undergraduate education -- even for its engineers. Tufts is much more like places like Amherst, Dartmouth, Brown. USC is more like NYU than any other place.

who cares... they're both great schools that just about anyone would be more than happy to attend. They're so close that to me the stats wouldnt play a role in my choice, instead i would focus more on weather, location, student body, buildings, etc.

Lolabelle, did you go to Tufts? Anyways before reading this thread (and still now), I've always thought USC and NYU were similar... both have undergrad business, cinema-arts, etc., stats-wise. Like true east-coast and west-coast equivalents. I don't know, maybe that's just me. It's actually funny, because my best friend is here at USC Marshall, and his twin brother is at NYU Stern...

Anyways, I just sent my FOURTH message to CC.

Good comparison! I just noticed that NYU is also on the "alphabetical" CC list and they have 42,736 posts. It seems like both USC and NYU are being excluded from the CC list of "Top Universities." (Remember that both schools have interest and activity exceeding 13 of the schools currently on the CC list of "Top Universities.") Maybe we should point it out on the NYU board and see how they feel about it.

it is funny when there is an argument about a certain college being in this CC "top" list.. anyways, if the list is about most popular colleges on CC then USC should be there.. if it is about top academic schools, then Tufts should be there.. forget about a tiny difference on the SAT stats or whatever, I have a ton of friends and some relatives going to both schools and I'm sorry but the Tufts student beats USC's hands down.. USC is definitely there with NYU and BC

"Popular" is an objective measurement using the activity/posts on these boards.

"Academic" is subjective and although an argument has been made to a slight difference in test scores between Tufts and USC accepted students, this does not take in to account GPA, rank, National Merit Scholars, or any other statistics. It also does not take in to account the majors/schools within the colleges so I will not concede this. It is not provable!

(I hope no one takes this debate too seriously. It's all in fun and it's all just a matter of personal opinion.)

Keep sending those requests for USC to be added as a CC Top University to "contact us" below!

Haha, I just hope I don't drive the CC moderators crazy with all my requests!

i say we bring this thread back and fight for what we believe in!!! HOORAH!!!!!

Hi folks,
Just thought I’d revive this thread to remind all who posted here to signed the petition thread to move USC to the CC Top Colleges section so we al don’t have to search through the alpha list to find it! THANKS -
