Why don't they count Freshman Grades?

Hi,

I'm a High School Freshman with a 4.2 GPA. Why do colleges & Universities not count freshman year grades?

Also do they recalculate the rank? from soph. year to senior year?

Thanks.

Most schools do consider Freshmen grades.

I know some do not, like Princeton, but the majority of universities factor in Freshmen year.

maybe because 9th grade used to be considered an extension of middle school? idk

It’s a time of transition, so colleges tend to give the first year more lee way if the student didn’t perform very well. You should, however, stick to the habit of doing as best as you possibly can regardless of whether colleges take your first year efforts into consideration.

Sorry, I’m hijacking your thread.

I have the opposite problem.

KonstantinZaitse, most universities do look at your freshman year.

I think Konstatin might refer more into the UCs, considering he/she is from California. Well, Konstation, if you plan to apply out-of-state, make sure to keep your Freshmen grades the way they are! They will help cushion your Rank/GPA when you might get Senioritis (or junioritis for some…)

Most colleges look at your freshmen grades. If you do well, props to you and keep up the momentum. Note though, that a DOWNWARD trend (lower grades as you get older) looks far worse than an upward trend from a bad start.
