Why duke essay

On the common app it says that this truly is optional and it won't hurt not to write it. Would it hurt to have written it, and it not be that great? I've already submitted the supplement, but am just curious now. Also, outside of the supplement, Is there a place where I could talk about having self studied advanced mathematics?

It shouldn’t hurt as long as it’s not terribly offensive. The entire point of the optional supplement is to show that you’re actually interested in Duke and have done your research. Just taking the time/effort to write the essay should help your chances. Also, you could mention the self studied math under the additional info section on common app or on some sort of attached resume.

It’s not offensive or horrible, just looking back at it, it is mediocre. Where/how would I attach a resume? I can’t put it in additional info because I’m talking about my best friend who was killed in a car accident there.

If you have more additional information, just send admissions an email with the file attached and phone them to follow up to make sure its added to your file

Seriously? Cool, thank you very much.

No Problem! Hope I see you next year

You got in ED? Nice, yeah I hope I see you next year too.
